HI all, so i brought a car today second hand, and the road tax run out today, it has a valid MOT and i have taken out insurance already, but i cant get the tax until monday due to not recieving the insurance certificate from the insurance company.....

So basically..... can i drive the car tomorrow to the post office ect... as i have heard about a 'grace' period whereby you can drive for up to 5 days without the roadtax being renewed?! i thought this was illegal but i need the car for work!!

You cannot drive the car legally without a road tax in the situation described.

Wait until the insurance arrives, then sort it. Dont use if before.

I usually buy my online but didnt this month due to postal strike, even though the police can check the DVLA to see if u have road tax, I think its still an offence to drive a car without a valid tax disc displayed

just get a taxi...much cheaper than a fine

Car wont be registered in his name yet... and it takes a while for insurance to register also, so online is a non starter.

I'm sure dvla have now changed the rules and you have some grace.....

I'll have a look.

I wouldn't risk it bud - not worth it for the sake of a few days - before everything sorted.

the 5 days grace period is for tax bought online. if you cannot do that, and you probably cannot then you need to wait for the PO to open

i'll think you will find thats when you have purchased the tax disc online, you have 5 days in which it dose not have to be displayed & are awaiting for the postal posse to send it to you.

Here you go.....

from the 1st of September 2008, those buying their vehicle tax online, by phone or by post will be able to legally continue to drive their vehicles for up to 5 days while they wait for their new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply where the new tax disc has been applied for before the current one expires and motorists should continue to display the expired disc on their vehicle, until the new one arrives. This will be of great benefit to those motorists who have to leave buying their tax disc until the last day of the month, because they are waiting to be paid. They can now still do that, but also get the benefits of taxing online, by phone or by post.
