Car Tax - you can drive your vehicle without a disc for 5 days!

Found 1st May 2011
I just decided to share this information for people that arnt aware. Im terrible for leaving my car tax online till last minute and was stressing a bit about not having my new disc when my old one expired but I found this usual bit of information.

I hope it helps someone in the future :-)

I ordered my tax disc online but it has not yet arrived, is it against the law to drive/park my vehicle on the public highway whilst I wait for the disc to arrive?

Since 1 September 2008, you can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road up to five days from the end of the month without displaying a valid tax disc provided you have made your application online or by telephone before your current vehicle tax/SORN expires.

i google it every year, now when i google it next year i might come up with this post :-)
Bit of a misleading title. You have to buy the tax in the usual way before the end of the month. Also yes you can park it on the road whilst waiting for it to arrive.
i thought that this was as long as you can prove that you had a valid tax disc for the month before and you have applied online/over the phone.

i'm sure that if a car has been sorn then this doesnt apply and you have to wait for the disc in the post.
i think road tax should be included into petrol price like in the other eu countries (poland for example) more you drive more you pay. what you think?

we do that any way.
Welcome to 2008
amazes me that people are "terrible for leaving my car tax online till last minute"

you get a reminder 3-4 weeks ahead so just do it then lol
not everyone has £155 sitting around in the bank for 3-4 weeks!
you need to make sure that your old disc is still in the window and that you have the conformation with you if you get stopped, and yes there is an offence of not displaying your tax disc .. £60 for your trouble

A little off-topic but do police cars need valid car tax? I saw one the other week with out-of-date tax. If I'd pointed it out to them, would they have had to give themselves an on-the-spot £60 fine?

yes they do
Thought they probably did, does make me wonder what they would have done if I had pointed it out (it was a good few weeks out of date). Didn't want to cause trouble (or disturb their fish+chip dinner) but was curiousas to what they would do!

fair enough - its not like it comes around every year at the same time lol

google 'budgeting'
You can indeed drive your car for 5 days after the tax has expired, as long as you've ordered it before the original tax disc expired - I don't quite get the post though? Is this not common knowledge and something you would know if you owned a car?
the answer is yes. i once had forgot to buy road tax, after 2 weeks i decided it was time to buy it..........................but then i realised my MOT was due..................................................and then my insurance............................................booked it in for an MOT on the weekend and bobs your uncle after shed load of money i got me road tax......................but then ran out of petrol

They don't need an MOT though which is a bit suss in my book..... So how do they get the tax disc with no MOT?

Most police cars are under three years old. Road Tax is £0.00
3 years is irrelevant.
