Car tyres, new or part worn???

    Hi there!!!

So the car is getting close to needing some new tyres so where do you guys stand on whether to get part worn or new tyres. Also does anyone have any experience on how long they last compared to each other? i got two budget tyres in november 08 and already had to replace one, and i only do 10,000 miles a year, am i expecting too much from my tyres?

What car is it? Certainly would advise new only, but good quality part worns are (probably) better than new budget tyres.

Depending on your driving style, you should normally get a minimum of 10k from the fronts (18-22k would be a typical average) and 20k+ from the rears. Have the tyres worn uniformly?

To answer your specific question is not really possible, depends on too many factors Your tyres are all that allows you to go, turn and stop...

Should never be tight on things that are important like that........just buy new, it's not a lot of money.

i thought part worn/repaired were banned now

I think budget tyres are crap to be honest, I generally go for part warn continental contisports, I never buy anything below 6mm. I usually pay around £50 to £60 which is close to the price of a budget tyre, the continentals are far better is the wet and snow and last longer than the budgets. My tyres are 225 40 18 if that makes any difference.
I was told that 20,000 miles is what to expect from a set of tyres (depending on driving style of course) :o)

Safety first in this matter, part worn could have damage and all sorts of problems....you must go for a new tyre everytime

Please don't scrimp on tyres as they are the only thIng keeping you on the road

don't tyres have a shelf life as to how long the compound stays useable? Depending on tyre popularity this may b shorter than you think if they have been in the warehouse for a while prior to being 1st used

as to mileage 10k would be nice thnk I got 5k out of one set of toyos lol on my Fwd car and they were down to less than 3mm right across them as I certainly wouldn't run them down to the legal min of 1.6mm across central 3/4 of tyre

as to conti ecosport 3's I have 225/40/18 of these on mine at the moment as wives car as 205/55/16 verain and seemed good. Yes they seem fine too on mine but boy are they rubbish in snow as my car was sliding side to side at the front just keeping a constant speed back has brigdstone potenzas and was not sliding at all?

Tyres are stamped with a date, DOM maybe? Anyway I think they they have a four year life span after that date. Check the website of individual companys to be certain.

Continental Eco tyres are designed to be cheaper to run, hence their poorer characteristics in the snow and wet than other Continental tyres. They are not a performance tyre.

"The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 SI No. 3117" covers this. I will stand by that a good quality part worn is (probably) better than a new budget tyre.

Hmm not sure, they are great on mine in snow... four wheel drive helps too I guess.
I'm no expert, I do about 700 miles per week so I do go through lots of tyres so I've tried lots of different makes, the conti's seem well suited to my car.

I get my tyres delivered from ]Camskill

I've been using Falken FK452's which are £62 each delivered and then about £10 each for a local garage to fit them. Compared to Kwikfit which wanted £190 each for a similar spec tyre.

My car takes 225/40/18's and the Falkens are as good as Pirelli and Michelin I've tried on it.

    i agree,,,safety first,,,

I use part worns whenever I can.

Ensure they are a good make and have at least 5mm tread and match the same make on the axle i.e. front needs to be a pair and rear needs to be a pair but front doesnt need to be same as rear.

Dont buy from a scrap dealer - only from a place that can check the balance properly and you will be fine.

So i think the general consensus is to not get budget tyres, whatever i get i am gonna make sure i get a good make, thanks for all your help.

I've found that cheapo tyres (Nankang etc) tend to last longer as they are made of a harder compound, pretty crap in the wet though.

Yep it's too important to skimp on things like tyres, and with the savings you've probably had from hotuk that's probably more than paid for an upgrade to a decent tyre! Happy New Year x

Hmm should of guessed there would be a compromise. strange that they seem ok ish in the wet though.

Bridgstone potenzas were same price Circa 120 each fitted as ended up replacing front tyres (new ones put on rear though) and then within space of two weeks managed to get punctures in existing two. They didn't have the ecosports so went for the potenzas instead. Wish I got These for the front now as these went on the rear and I put the contis on the front.
