Carol Barnes dies
Former ITV News presenter Carol Barnes has died in hospital.

The 63-year old was admitted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton last weekend after reportedly suffering a massive stroke.

She was one of the best known faces in TV news for more than two decades and presented all the main ITV News bulletins including News At Ten.

Barnes began her working life as a teacher before moving into broadcasting in 1973 with a job at London radio station LBC.

She joined ITN three years later as a reporter and spent several years covering stories at home and abroad.

She remained with the broadcaster until 1998, except for a break from 1989-1991 when she worked as a launch presenter for the Channel 4 Daily breakfast programme.

Barnes returned to ITN in 2003 to work on the broadcaster's now-defunct 24-hour ITV News Channel.

Barnes had a long relationship with former Government minister Denis MacShane, with whom she had a daughter, Clare.

She went on to marry ITN cameraman Nigel Thompson and the couple had a son, James.

Tragedy struck in March 2004 when Clare was killed after her parachute failed to open while skydiving in Australia.

In her last years, Barnes ran a media training company and wrote for magazines.

Her son James described her as "a beautiful, kind and delicate person".

ITV News presenter Alastair Stewart, a close friend for many years, said: "Barnesy was a rare creature - as capable on location as she was in the studio.

"Her public face was that of the polished professional. Privately she was just a lovely, generous and delightful person.

"Despite all that life threw at her she remained great fun to be with. We shall miss her very much indeed."

Former ITN chief executive Stewart Purvis said: "It is a very sad day for friends, colleagues and viewers."

"She was friends with us, she was friends with the viewers, she was friends with everybody."
