    Carving pumpkins - edible or not?

    Hi there.
    Thinking of making some pumpkin soup with the insides of my carving pumpkin from ASDA, however, I know that they sell both edible/carving ones, with the carving ones being much bigger.
    Would it be safe to eat, or will it have been genetically modified to make some of them so big!

    Funny I was thinking that as well - as the one I just did literally had nothing inside it and wondered what the Americans use for pumpkin pie etc! They probably have normal big ones full of pumpkin unlike our crappy versions X)

    tbh i thought all pumpkins were edible oO.........i did threaten the kids with 'pumpkin soup'...'pumpkin pie' etc as we were carving ours , but got to be honest the smell made me retch never mind the kids X)....even the rabbit turned his nose up !!

    Stinks doesn't it? I'm dreading put the tealight in the one we carved earlier because its going to be really bad. Wish I'd bought an LED candle light for it instead.

    yeh so do i it stinks even more when the lid of pumpkin starts burning , you have a lovely aroma of 'raw pumpkin' ( thats smells like sprouts imo ) with a lovely charcoal effect !!!!, ..bork ... oh jeez its getting dark , betta go and light them now.......brb gonna get peg for nose too !!X) '' Happy halloween, have a good night '' x

    In my younger days made pumpkin pie as you would an apple pie. Tasted like cooked cucumber pie and could not imagine a more disgusting flavour.

    Real pumpkin pie is packed with sugar cream and spices. The pumpkin gives very little to the taste. But having made that also it is lovely.

    Well I'm just going to take your word for it as its sounds gross! After carving one today I can honestly say I will never ever eat or cook pumpkin

    Hi, I lived in USA and there they don`t eat these pumpkin...Also I believe it should say on the label for decoration only or edible..

    This is the part of the problem of the modern capitalist world. We are so far removed from our food we look to a supermarket label to tell us what is what.

    There is no such thing and an inedible pumpkin. Some may taste better than others, but that is so with all foods. As a matter of fact most of the fruit and veg supermarkets sell is grown to "look good" rather than for taste or longevity.

    The irony is that because these pumpkins are actually really in season at the moment they are actually better tasting and fresher than some you may pay more for at different times of the year.

    Our basic "carving" pumpkin when opened up this year smelled and was incredibly fresh and I am looking forward to roast pumpkin soup as are my children this year.

    Go across the water to Europe and people would fall about laughing at the way we interact with our food sources!

    I watched Hugh last night and he had quite a few pumpkin recipes. I must admit its not something that I have used for cooking so far but always prepared to at least try new stuff.
    I think its better though to try something that you know has been well prepared than to made a huge mistake yourself and then not want to try again.
    Pumpkin seeds are also edible. Some countries dry and salt them and they are used as an apetiser.

    Got mine in the oven as I am reading your post.

    Went to a deli/cafe in Grantham last year and they gave them to you with the pumpkin soup. I asked them how they were done and the guy said he just tossed them in a little olive oil, sprinkled with salt and pepper and roasted until golden.

    Lovely and full of roughage, which is something we always struggle to get into our modern diet.

    Yes you can eat both but the ones sold for carving may not taste as good!
