True I'd probably go for either a RENAULT Clio 2.0 16v Renaultsport 172 Cup or a ALFA ROMEO 147 2.0 TS Selespeed Lusso

Mazda 6 Diesel

43mpg, well built, reliable, good quality.

That is correct, the engine is an MZR-CD which is a Mazda built engine. Mines on 153,000 miles now and still going.

I just got rid of my Alfa 147, loved it...keep swaying towards another, but it was a pain in the ass sometimes, but I did still love her!

Going to go check out some of the ideas so far. ....still swayed to a BMW.

What's your sex and age? That will restrict some options for insurance reasons.

That's absolute cack, 1. Their not Ford Engines and 2. Ford Engines are good and reliable now day's.

Ford Focus ST170? had one and enjoyed it and is within your budget.

What about the low end of the car market Hyundai i20 1.4 ?

Ford Focus - Great all round cars, Cheap reliable.

Prestige badge i,e BMW, Mercs etc will generally cost more to maintain and are generally driven by big ego'd men, Dumb Blonds or drug dealers.

Golf's are good but rather boring and never change, Everything on them cost's more.

SEAT Leon Cupra, virtually the same as a VW, plenty of guts if you get the right one

But Ford doesn't really have a good name for reliability at all. Never really have.

I would say their cars are more reliable than they used to be but their customer service is very poor.
