    cats and fleas

I have a house cat and have notice it has lots of scabs on its skin, and is constantly grooming itself (more then usual) also scratching. What is this? Could it be flea bites, if so whats the best course of action, what can i buy to get rid of them, or what else can it be?

I think without seeing them, it might be hard to say.

Is it very expensive to take it to the vet to get it checked out? Obviously they'll be the best people to advise.

Sorry...never had cats so I can't answer your question and no idea how expensive vets are so if it is too expensive, then hope someone can help you on here.

IF it is fleas you'll need some frontline or advantage that you put n the back of the cats neck, get at least 3 applications, do not buy the cheap stuff u get in supermarkets, but u can get it from america from ebay generally cheaper.
also ud need a house treatment, probably a spray is best
u can get it all from the vets, or ebay, but obviously then u have to wait for delivery

it may not be fleas thow, could be ticks, but most flea treatments treat that aswel

could be something else entirely, have you checked the fur to see if u can see fleas, if the cat is covered in scabs he should be swarming in fleas, ud see them scurrying about

Buy a metal flea comb from a pet store, they have very thin gaps and the fleas get caught in the teeth, use a screwdriver to squash them or drown them. Then get a flea treatment, the phials for the back of the cats head are best, my chemist sells them, or look on MSE for the best deals online. If on benefits the PDSA may be able to help.

In my experience cats don't show that they have fleas until it is a bad infestation. It sounds like your cat might have a flea allergy. A good way to see if it is fleas.. are if you find tiny reddish brown specks wherever the cat has been sitting/lying. Those are the fleas poos. My own recommendation if it is fleas, is to just take your cat to the vet for an injection. The injection is very fast acting and kills all the fleas on the cat in quick time. Any fleas in the house then that jump back onto the cat die too. It's faster and more effecting than the drops and you don't have to comb the cat, which can be painful with its scabs.

Give the house a thorough hoovering, and wash bedding, throws etc in at least 60c water. If you have by some misfortune managed to get a flea infestation in the house, your local council may well do a free pest extermination service. They come round and spray the house for you.

Good luck, hope cat feels better soon.

Good advice. The cat will be in a lot better health in general if it is a flea problem that you get dealt with. A bad flea infestation can cause anaemia in the cat if left untreated. Even if you have never let the cat out it could still have fleas. Not an expert but heard that given the right conditions a flea infestation can take hold quickly. With the recent hot weather even some fleas finding their way into the house from cats that inhabit the garden may have been enough.

I picked some up from the supermarket 'Bob Martin' spot on. I should of got something better from the pet shop as after googling Bob Martin, it seems like its not that good. Will have to wait and see now and if it doesnt work, it's going to mean waiting a month before i try a better brand:x

maybe you should have read the replies after posting the thread and before buying

Bob Martin stuff is total pants. Wasted money, trust me.

You need Frontline for the cat, and Indorex spray for the house. They are expensive, but do the job properly. Supermarket stuff is false economy.

Tbh I don't know, but I doubt it's a month. Phone your vet and ask for advice

it might be worth taking kitty for a check up anyway, just to make sure it is only fleas.

I agree with the rest of the posters. Frontline is definitely the best. I always shop around online for mine as it is around half the price of my vets:thumbsup:

We treated our cats last summer with frontline had them at the vet a week later and they still had fleas. The vet ok'd us to use the drops again that week so its VERY unlikely that you'll have to wait a month before using the drops again
