Changing the appearance of a house (house painting/rendering)

Looking for a bit of help.

My sister is looking to purchase a house that has been reduced quite a bit in the current climate. But to be honest it's not the best looking house in the world. I guess in estate agent speak you'd say it does NOT have curb- appeal.

Does anyone know of any web sites that can be used to maybe upload a picture to then "show" the appearance after, say, white-rendering. Etc.

She doesn't want to ring round getting loads of quotes, when she's still unsure if it'll do the trick.

Appreicate help in advance.

TBH, if you can see that there is potential to improve the house, then it probably worth doing if you have the time. You can also use this to negotiate the proce down, and the money you save will more than pay for the cost of repairs

Exactly what she was thinking. TBH she is looking to buy the house as a new home, and not as a Buy-to-let etc. She's just a little worried about the appearance. it's not stone built (i.e black stone), it's brick built but it's a near-black stone.

prob a deal-breaker in her eyes. hence my thought about rendering etc.

...now there's an idea, Is there some tool for that or are you saying colour the black bricks white, one buy one!

Even better than photoshop. have the house 3D modelled using CGI, and apply a number of different materials to see which looks best, the advantage of this over using photoshop is that you can view the model from any angle and just re-render the image rather than taking another photograph and re-photoshopping it.

If you can find similar looking houses in Google Street View, you could go up and down the street seeing what others have done

depends on the level of detail your wanting, on weather you can find someone who actually does this for a living and looking to build up his portfolio while he's bored at work most days ;-)

you might well be able to get it free of charge...... ok you can have it free of charge.

take a couple of pictures and I can build you a v basic model of the existing structure from eye (by all means go get some dimensions if you want it true to scale but its not that important) upload them here or email them to [email protected], we'll take it from there.

that will look decent when rendered..........id go for a grey/purple colour vso it doesnt stand out like a sore thumb in cream

that'll do, I can guestimate the dims from the size of the door, is that just one house? its a fair decent size.

gonna be tomorrow before I start on it, wont take long though.

no prob - again thanks for your help.

It looks huge, but strangely it's not that huge! bit of a reverse tardis!
:-D

I wouldn't render. Think of the ongoing maintenance (painting, chucks of render falling off, possible breaching of dpc etc etc).

I personally think it looks pretty good. A good pressure washing may well do the trick to tiday it up, but not render.

I wouldnt render either, ide spend the money on a good blasting and a change of windows maybe

Yep, looking at the pics, there is some green fungal growth on the walls at low level and on the corner wall. Get rid of all that, maybe paint the stone cills and sort the windows and your laughing.

How much is it BTW (and where in the country)?

Agree don't render. Chunks are falling off mine, I suspect it all needs re doing, cannot afford it yet. Reluctant to spend money painting it......but it really needs it, worst in the street.

How many yrs does render last, we have been here 20yrs and done before that

it would depend on what materials you use but some renders/coatings are guaranteed maintenance free for 10 years or more so not technically correct

if you pay for a decent job in the first place you shouldnt have any problems and if you do reputable traders will reapair

Render = 10yrs (if the guarantee is valid)

Brickwork = 100 - 200yrs

I am a property maintenance manager, and in my professional opinion I would not render...I have seen/spec'd repair jobs on render...it ain't pretty...or cheap. The worst that can hapen with brickwork is some re-pointing if the mortar is soft. Looking at the house in question, I can't see/don't suspect an issue with the mortar joints.

Nice looking place BTW. Looks solid to me. The fungal growth will prob be down to general wet weather, nothing structural/detrimental.

Any joy?

have to apologise I didnt get as much time on it yesterday as I'd have liked so its still blockey and in the very early stages, i'll have more time this afternoon to get it modelled more accuratly and start putting some real meat on the bones (management buzzword) It'll start looking like a proper house soon.

I do say I've not had long to play with it, I've a got a real job to do, everything starts off like that if done in autoCAD, i'd rather do it in maya myself - but work wont buy it me :x

Never mind though eh? like I said more detail to come, its a step by step process:
