Cheap Bike - where to get one

This year i've been on a year in industry, this has mainly involved me sitting behind at desk, to be honest ive become a bit of a fat bar steward. to overcome this im going to the gym but i also think it would be worthwhile getting a bike to ride to work.

so i'm looking for a cheap bike to ride to and from work and may be other short distances. I'm embarrassed to say the ride to work would only be about 1.5 miles to work and ive been driving it for nearly a year

1.5 miles!!! you could walk that in ten minutes and it would be safer and cheaper.

that'd work out at 3 miles a day which is ok for cycling

anyhows can i ask if you have thought about how you would get dried off, looking sharp if it rained the whole way to work?

I had planned to cycle to work but my elbow has put a stop to that

Have a look at the cycle to ]work scheme it says you can save upto 50% off a neew bike

You know if you had walked to work for the past year you would have saved around £150 in petrol, enough to buy a bike:-D

@harlzter: thanks didnt realise the ops werent censored

@allstar: i think three miles sounds a nice amount too, if it was really raining hard i'd probably drive, but if it was drizzling i'd just get changed at work. a few other people in the office already do it.

@imortal: i dont think id qualify for soemthing like that as im not an actaul employee, if you know what i mean

yeah 3 miles is nice thats about what i walk to and from work.

i walk at a slow pace so walking would mean i had to get up extra early, i really dont want to do that

    well then cycle it is

i dont walk too fast but at a steady pace and it takes 50mins to get to work and another 50 back lol

    badger must walk really fast

Are you 100% sure you will use the back or is it likely to be done a short while then back to the car? If you are unsure then your local freecycle may be a good bet as they are ten a penny on there, at least that way if you dont use it you can pass it along to someone else and no money wasted, if you do use it as you intend you can then spend on a better bike and re-gift the bike on there, there are regularly bikes up for the taking where people have had your idea and its fell by the wayside so they are hardly used. ut either way you will not be spending out and taking the gamble with money!

Im assuming you will be on roads and paths, so you are best getting either no suspension or front suspension, dont touch full suspension unless you are paying over £500 they are not worth it, due to cheap build.

Halfords usually have a couple of cheaps bikes but depends on how much you are wanting to pay.

i thought about freecycle but the groups around me dont seem to be very good, most messages are all wanted ones.

I will be using the bike, plus once i get back to uni i'll be using it there as im considering getting rid of the car,

i tried adtrader but they all seem to be full suspension bikes which i really dont want.

Hiya, try sterlinghouse.co.uk/ . They have good deals. Pretty basic and they have a BOGOF for £99!

try decathlon if you have one near you

Yeah i would suggest stay clear of full suspension, i have one, and it kills going up hills. Also tried cycle king or halfords.. Ill have a look for ya.

    Something like this:

No, it will last you a couple of years at least unless you leave it exposed to the weather - but it will probably make your actual cycling about twice as tough as it should be. I've learned my lesson with bikes in this price range. If you are going to keep the cycling up - you are better buying something like a Trek hybrid. You'll save a LOT of energy and you'll save money in the lon-run too.

edit: btw, you'll have to spend £200-£250 for a Trek bike, more as you go up the range. A 7.0 is fine though - very good value for money imo

I brought the havoc bike from toys r us for £50 delivered! its out of stock at the moment but i wish i had got a second hand one name bike from ebay as its starting to fall apart. But as its lasted about a year and didnt cost me that much its not to bad and i do about 3 miles a day as well!

I would also agree with liddle above that if you can afford it get something thats going to last by trek giant etc

i didnt want to spend a lot of money at the minute in case i decided i couldnt be bothered, if after a year i was still doing it then i would definately shell out some extra cash and get a hybrid style bike, all the cheap bikes seem to be mountain bikes though. all the second hand bikes near me seem to be full suspension ones, i dont want to put 30% of my energy into compressing my rear suspension everytime i peddle.

also if i leave my car at home while im at uni i'll be able to shell out alot more on beer etc. (maybe even a good bike)

Probably not want you are looking for but interesting article anyway
Fully recyclable, the bike made out of cardboard

i thought i might hijack your thread instead on making my own!

i'm wanting to get a cheap as ican bike also as i dont know if i'll keep it up! plus my garage isnt that sercure so dont want a mega expensive bike! even though the missus says i should as she used to be into cycling when younger and build a £2000 bike!

i'll be doing 10miles a day to get to work and back. guess i'll lucky as its flat all the way and is also 90% cycle lanes on the pavements
