    Cheap cars that are good on fuel.

    Is there a website that has a list of which cars have the best MPG but for the older cars? All i can find is for new cars that are like thousands. After a new run around as I'm sick of constantly filling up the car, especially with todays price of fuel.

    Just pick the smaller engines, but on the other hand, lots of small cheap french cars with small engines around but the servicing parts situation is terrible (citroen saxo c1 are bad for parts and not very reliable)

    either a polo lupo with petrol or better diesel or a small engined ford is the best long term bet for parts and such and decent fuel economy

    also driving makes a big difference, you can read about hypermiling, but some of the ideas go too far

    Try to drive with as little breaking as possible, thats the real key to not wasting it, and also dont do little journeys like to the local shops when you can walk

    Cheers, well I currently have a 96 1.4 polo. Was looking into a corsa or fiesta? Just really need something that doesn't guzzle it.

    unless your polo is worn out, a fiesta or corsa is a similar engine size (1.3 or 1.4) and weight of car, and will do very similar miles, if you did track down a smaller engine for those cars they still dont do better miles ( i had an old fiesta with 950cc and it was awful, low power meant you had to floor it and got terrible mpg)

    so you only upward move would be a small diesel VW, as those are about the most economical cars there are, but realistically, my fiesta gets around 40 mpg (lots of town driving) and my old work diesel 205 (1.6) used to do around 50mpg doing the same kind of driving, so it isnt drastically more

    real world use is different to what the book mileage says, they often say 65-70mpg but that just isnt realistic

    Ahhh i see. Well i'd seen a 1.0 polo and was thinking of down sizing but is it worth the hassle? I see what you mean, dont want a smaller engine if it has to rev its ******** off to go anywhere. Gonna count the miles on this the next time i fill up.

    even if you test drive it you wont notice the 1liter being low on power, it will have nothing in the boot, only have you in it, and you will not be used to it

    its so easy to find yourself using over half throttle just to drive gently, and use more revs, you just cant drive a 1l car gently, I would avoid

    Perhaps your polo wants a good service? it will be an injection at least, is it high mileage (so fairly worn out)
    what i do, is slightly over inflate my tyres, and drive very gently, and lay off the brakes,

    Ahh i see what you mean. I've no history of the car so not sure if its been serviced...might do that. Milage is 86k so not too bad. However when im on the motorway, once i reach around 70mph its doing around 40,000 revs which seems abit high to me, is that normal?

    im sure you mean 70mph and 4000 revs

    so yes, about right in 5th i think, about the same in my fiesta, only a much bigger engine will be different (over 2l)

    slow down a bit to 60, its less stress and less fuel

    rover L series diesels are good on fuel and very cheap to buy

    my 420 td does 50-60 mpg and cost £400, Ive had it just over year and its just flown through its mot again so ill keep running it

    Sorry yeah, 4,000. My new job depends on the car however im getting 40p per mile used, not worked out if i use more than that though. Repped btw.

    no you wont use more!

    40p per mile is £20 for 50 miles, and if you drive fairly well thats little over £5 in fuel, the rest more than covers wear/tear and dont forget the insurance hike for travelling FOR work and not just to/from work
