cheap first phone for a 12 year old?

Good morning all you HUKD'ers. I'm looking for a phone for my little boy. It will be his first phone and so I don't want to spend a lot of money until he can show that he is responsible. I have a very small budget of £50 and will get a PAYG SIM until His birthday next year when he may........... Get an iPhone contact. (We're use to Apple devices). To be honest I'm not sure what specs etc as I doubt it will be blazing for £50 but as long as he can call me/text and get a few apps then that's fine.
    Many thanks in advance.

Oh, and I don't mind if it's refurb? Just don't really want a private eBay one as I want to make sure it works as its a pressie. Thanks.

we got ours the £7.50 tesco capped package you get a free phone we picked the pop star with 5" screen
250mins 500 internet and 5000 text messages and the contract is capped with £2.50 buffer so the max will be £10 pm
payg costs usually £10 pm so this way you know hes always got a phone that works
    link
    instore or online
also if you add a 2nd phone to the contract you can each choose a bonus either extra mins or data or 500mins to other tesco mobiles

Have you tried somewhere like Grainger Games or similar? Somewhere where they sell refurb handsets and get a warranty included? I think £50 is a reasonable amount for a first phone so certainly achievable.

Thanks. I'll take a look. We already have 3 tesco contracts so that would be good, however I would then be contracted for 2? Years and I'm sure if he's a good boy he would like an upgrade before then. I think I'll see if it can be upgraded before the end of the term. He can then use extra family perks too. I'll check out the phone now. Thanks for your reply

Got my son his first phone in Oct from tesco mobile I was looking at payg but I think think might be a better option in the long run brand new Motorola Moto e3 £8.50 a month you get 750gb data 250min 2000txts plus its capped so can't go over £10.50 plus he got a smart pair of headphones with the deal to, I've had a play with the phone it's pretty smart as well.

    Thanks, I'll look now
It's more the actual phone I'm struggling with as we all have iPhones and so I'm not sure about other makes. I even thought a windows phone and android were the same thing! I have been told android is better for more apps, is that what you guys would suggest?

I'd look on the facebook selling sites for an unlocked iphone 4s and then use a giffgaff £5 goodybag sim or similar.

Yes, get an android phone for games etc. It is much better than a windows phone imho

iPhone 4 like new £49.99 from 02, got white one for my daughter, excellent condition

    iphone 4 02 £49.99

My sons first phone was a cheap samsung I got from Tesco a couple of years ago. Was only £60. Last christmas we got him a Moto G, think it was 3rd gen, from CEX for about £90. He says its a brilliant phone. When my hubby upgrades to iphone7 in Feb, Im getting his 6 and son will be getting my 5S. He has surprised me in how he has looked after them.
I think as long as they can play games and text mates it doesn't really matter.

Tesco is good idea as they cap the account. We have the offspring's capped at £2.50 which one of them goes into nearly every month but at least we know it won't get any worse.

I got this for my son It's a good phone for the price and not the end of the world if it gets smashed, I also told him if he smashed it he would get a nokia brick as his next phone
I then got the life mobile deal (now plus net sim for £5) and capped it at £5.50 uswitch.com/mob…ls/

Thanks. Looks good but a bit more than I want to pay but thanks anyway.
We have 2 old iPhone 4's in the house but both have little faults that he knows about. Shame I won't be able to pass one off as a pressie!
Does anybody know if the tesco mobile phone shops have better/different deals than those online?

I have also seen a £1.99 refurb clamshell phone on the O2 website that I'm gonna prank him with! Thing is he will probably believe it.
If I can get one from tesco for 12 months contract will prob go down that route. Now just need to choose a phone.

Hi. Just looked and all the contracts seem to be 2 years in the site. Did you get yours from in store or online? Thanks.

In store they have offers every couple of days next time your passing there's usually a little advert board at most stores that you trip over as your enter

there's an Alcatel pop something or other at tesco atm for 64. slightly over budget but 720p screen and 1 GB ram. should be OK for a first phone?
