    Cheap laptop around £199

    Hi Guys,
I need your help . I am trying to find a laptop for a family member for xmas. Basically it needs to be able to handle wireless broadband one way or another and other basic tasks.

Got a top limit of about £199.

Any ideas where I could pick up a cheap re-furb or similar?

Easily put XP on it, and a wireless card...its probably the cheapest you will get from a shop. your next option is eBay, or second hand somewhere else. But that one should do most things you'd need. might not be great for games. and you can get a 512mb memory stick later on for it to upgrade the ram

Any idea how often the refurb ones turn up on the Medion website?

Not trying to put anyone off and i'm only giving my opinion, but personally I don't think XP would run well on the PC you quoted, even with a memory upgrade. The hard drive size is very small so right away it would be lacking storage space, and the processor speed is not so great. Plus XP will cost @ another £60 in OEM form to add to the purchase cost, and say £15 - £20 for a wireless adapter. I'd say better to save and look for a low priced current spec laptop (new or second hand) with XP pre-loaded, and built in wireless etc as it might work out a better investment if you can afford it.

For that price I think you're going to have to go second hand (maybe ebay, but beware someone may be palming off a useless laptop to you that hardly works).

Also if you want it to run XP in a useful way, go for a processor thats at least 700 MHz and get at least 256mb ram (thats a BARE minimum).

The laptop suggested by tazandsaz seems OK but add onto that price the cost of windows xp and more RAM, and you may be better off buying a slightly more expensive laptop with XP pre-installed.

Hi Guys, I have 512k of ram and also a 20GB hard drive kicking around so an upgrade should be ok. Also XP I have already...... its looking more and more like eBay!

yeah just make sure that the RAM is compatible with the laptop you get. good luck! as we can't post ebay links theres not much point me posting any individual auction links here.

There are quite a few on this website that might interest you.
