    cheapest way to heat house

    imagine 2 identical houses with same boiler/radiater system......

    house 1-

    the radiators are switched on 24hrs a day on the lowest setting

    house 2

    the radiators are on full blast on 1hr intervals- so on 12hrs a day

    which house uses the least energy consumption/has the lowest bill?

    if the rads are on all day but on the lowest setting then the house wouldn't heat up much at all so that would be the cheapest but also the coldest

    It'd depend on how much energy was being used in either setting. If the high setting consumes twice as much energy as the low setting, it will be equal, but if the high setting uses more than double it will be more expensive to do it the 12hr on/off method.

    The easiest way to find out how much energy each setting uses is with clock and a notepad. Take a note of the number on the gas meter at the low setting, take another note after sixty minutes. Deduct the first number from the second, you have the gas consumed.

    Need more info, for example:

    A gas burner is more efficient when burning at full capacity.
    The heat exchange between the house and the outside depends on the driving force (temp difference) between inside and out. Hence a high inside temperature will mean a big heat loss.
    The pipework which is initially heated during the start up stage of the heating system may have high heat loss into areas which you do not want heating, thus initial heat loss is high.
    etc. etc.

    It is much more cost effective to keep the heating system on low all day as the waste is to keep heating and cooling a house or item. You do need to make sure the building is well insulated though as this then keeps heat where is should be. Might i suggest a couple of extra jumpers?:)

    I'd go house 1 as it fits with what i use but at higher settings as below -
    Best way as told to me by several plumbers/heating engineers is to have your heating set to one with a thermostat in the hall or similar set to the temp you req (around 19-21 i suppose with a little lower over night) then have your radiator TVR's set to a temperature you would prefer that room to be at. Then the main thing is to keep all your doors shut in the house. Each room with hold the temp and the rad will only be using hot water to top up the temp in that room.
    The same goes for the whole heating system as once the thermostat in the hall is up to temp it switches off the boiler and only comes on to bring the house up 1 or 2 degrees.

    Having the heating switching on for example at 6am ready for work, then again in the afternoon means that several times a day its gotta work full pelt to bring the temp up 5 6 or 7 degrees which probably takes a few hours at a time rather than just topping up throughout the day.

    My gas bills dropped a lot last year using the 1st method (although i had a new boiler in 2005 too, but didn't really notice a difference the 2 previous years) and am sticking too it.

    Some people may post with different ideas but this seems the best to me, and my house is always comfortable - not over hot as i have a young daughter and have read that babies rooms should be around19 - and when i get home from work in the early hours of the morning although it may be set to 16 it aint cold but also my boilers not constantly on, it just then brings it up 2 degrees in the mornin.

    I'd imagine this is correct but am almost totally ignorant on this subject so will be reading with interest the various theories (folk and otherwise) presented here. Let's hope a boiler specialist comes along!

    In that case you'd have to have some clear method of measurement between the "lowest setting" and "full blast" setting I'd imagine, before you could establish any firm conclusion on the energy consumption of both scenarios.

    It is very inefficient to let rads cool down and then have to reheat again until optimum room temp is reached.

    Best setting IMHO if you are in all day is to have the timer set to come on about 2 hours before you get up and go off 2 hours before you go to sleep. I have mine set to about 20 degrees and just wear a jumper.

    I have read that it is more efficient to maintain optimum temperature rather than reheating from cold each time.

    I do think it is more efficient to heat HW just once though but CH is different.

    Either way, the OP has two totally different scenarios so the question posted is moot.

    Yes but you don't have the boiler on al day you have it controlled by a thermostat so it only turns on when the temp drops below your chosen level.

Q = MCpdT means that either routeis completely 100% equal at all times no matter what, except for the sort of points I provided above (in which case the answer to the question is "there must be more information". To provide the same duty (i.e. heat) to the house overall, the same energy must be added.

    My gut feeling would be that heating and cooling would be better unless you spend 100% of your time in the house.

    What have it on 20 then wear a jumper if cold!!!? I have mine on 24 hrs a day on 15!! turn it up to 19 if i have a bath or bathing kids. Why would you have it up to ova 20 when it aint that cold outside if beyond me lol

    I knew my heating bill will have to be carefully monitered this year with the rises.... so i held off with the heating beinf switched on as long sa i could...i then only had it on when bathing the kids etc... but now have it on 15 to take the chill off and just wear a jumper if needed. that way you dont actually get used to the heat and dont have to turn it up anymore!

    Alot of people i know moan that its cold in my house and they take there coat off and they are wering a t shirt....its bloody winter not summer i tell them! One of my family i went round had there's so high it made me feel sick and it was 27 in there flat :O

    mines on 24-7 at 21deg c it is so much cheaper than settin on timer.
    Also you'd be surprised at how long it takes 4 temp to drop 1deg.

    Well I agree with these two posts.

    You can't create nor destroy energy. It all has to go somewhere.

    Best to just use the heating when you need it, get used to the cold, wear a jumper etc!

    If you heat the house too much you'll lose more energy, ie it's harder to keep a house at 20 than it is to keep it at 15 (more efficient I mean).
