Child passport fees - help please...

I'm hoping someone can help me with this one. My son's passsport is due up soon. Looking on the main direct gov website it states it is £49 for a first passport and £49 to renew it. Do they no longer issue 10 year passports to under 16's whereby you renew the photo free of charge after 5 years?? If not this means it is £49 for a child passport for 5 years and £77.50 for an adult 10 year one, not really fair!!
If this is the case think I shall be giving my holidays a miss. Mine is up for renewal and I've got a new baby to buy one for too!!!

yes its the said fee for an under 16 passport. we had to get out 2 year old one last year. gutted at the cost, but its the price you pay to have fun in the sun!!

under 16's is only for 5 years unless by the time of renewal the child turns 16, and u can then apply for a 10 yr one

That is what I thought but how can they charge so much for a childs when they are for only 5 years. It used to be cheaper and was renewed free of charge to make it into a 10 year one. That's my holday cancelled. Although I have just seen these new identity cards whereby they are only £30 and can be used instead of a passport. Although for some unknown reason you have to live in the North West. Might be good for me as I only travel to Spain. Hope they come round this way soon. Does anyone know anything about these??

this is why we are not going to portugal this year, all of my kids pp run out this year

i live in the north west, where did you find out about that? bit late now tho iv already got mine:x

tbh the cost isnt too much considering u can use it for 5 years

10 year = 7.90 a year
5 year = 9.80 a year

I would take a guess that it costs just as much time, effort and money to make a child passport thus they charge the same price which seems pretty fair to me. As if they charged less for child passports they would offsets the costs against the adults passports prices.

just trying to point out there is not much cost difference between a 10 yr or 5 yr. all depends how much you want yr holiday. surely it could be said if you cant afford the passports, you cant afford the actual holiday.

before i call, does anyone here know.... does a passport need 6 months left to run by date of return within europe? my kids passports run out in november.....

I only go on a budget flight to Spain where my mom has a villa. We only spend the same as we would here as don't go out etc. We usually pay £400 for flights for 5 but this will really push the price up as I need to get 3 this year. Although mine expires on 10th August so may just get it in beforehand.
To renew doen't cost them alot, it's the first passport that costs them with the interviews so the rest of us have to off set the cost of these as they charge the same for all!!

It all depends on the country you are travelling to. Some countries require 3 months, others require 6 months i think. Its probably best to check with a travel agent or on the Foreign Office website ]here.
