children in need text to donate where does my money go

radio 2 advertised children in need today where you text in to win a compitition at the cost of a fiver a text. but when they read out the terms and conditions they mentioned that from your fiver about half goes to the charity depending on your phone provider.

my question is does ee or vodaphone or whoever take the other half.

Yes, Radio 2's terms seem to suggest that...

    4. Entry to the competition is only by texting to the short code 84222. … 4. Entry to the competition is only by texting to the short code 84222. Text messages cost £5.00 (when you receive the bounce-back message referred below) plus your standard network message charge (based on your service provider rates). Each text message entry will result in a donation to BBC Children in Need of between £2.49 and £3.75 (depending on your mobile network operator). Please Note: you may enter as many times as you wish, up to a daily maximum of 6 entries per mobile phone number. For each entry, the donation will go through and all correct entries will go into the automatic random selection but there is a maximum of one prize per mobile phone number.

I've stopped giving to national campaigns, too much of the money given is soaked up in "costs"; and I know this because I used to work for a local branch of a large charity, and we rarely saw anything come down to local level, we had to support ourselves.

The rules are a bit tighter these days, but I can remember the shock when it was revealed that over 80% of the money given to the Sally Army went on "admin".
