I am growing some chilli plants [from seed] and need some advice;

they are in a 10" clay pot and are now about 4" above the soil, they look reasonably healthy but when watering them the other day i looked underneath and saw that there is a root poking out of the botom of the pot (where the ventilation hole is). is this ok or am i constrianing these poor blighters in too small a pot?

also, how much to water them, best temperature etc?

any nuggets of wisdom really appreciated! ;-)

I just have them ( peppers - hot and sweet) on the staging in the greenhouse , stand the pots in a seed tray and keep moist, feed when they get quite big once a week and wait!! I have 3/4 plants per 12" pot

We grew our chillis too late last year, just managed to produce tiny little buds before it got too cold

Yes, got to get them going early enough.

SAF?

I felt I had to be morally outraged at something today so I chose the Second Amendment Foundation. I don't believe Americans having guns is a good idea

I grow chillis - made the mistake of using small pots last year and they ended up all skinny! I've got about 30 plants this year and their about 10-12 inches at the moment and starting to flower. The pots are about 8 inches diameter with two each... seems to be fine... I reckon 12" for 4 is about right...

Keep them moist all the time - I water everyday and out of direct sun during the day or they'll get damaged.

Warm and moist - be sure to kill any greenfly (washing up liquid in water spray)

Good luck!

If you want a decent crop of fruit, feed once a week with tomato fertiliser.

Get a cheap bottle from Wilkos or somewhere similar and it will last for ages.

our plant died RIP chilli plant

Chillis are just starting to turn red on our two beasties, who are loving the kitchen window sill!

is it too late to start growing one? do they continue all year round or are they seasonaL

I've got about 8 chilis at the moment on two of my plants with lots and lots of flowers, also got a dozen tomatoes and the pepper plants are in flower too. All this on my windowsills in the flat! Well chuffed!

That's impressive. Must be a nice sunny flat!! What variety of tomatoes have you got on windowsills? Tumblers?
None of my windowsills are wide enough or light enough for anything - good job I've got a greenhouse but it's a later start because it isn't heated.

Impressive by you as well little tiger.

You sit on a shelf in the conservatory??
I think that you need to pot them on . I have 3/4 to a 12" pot but see above also .
You could always just keep them like that out of intrest to see what might happen, I suppose.

How big is that pot? It looks pretty small to me.
The two choices would be to take out (technical term - thin) all but two if it's about an 8" pot and grow those two on , as above ^^^^^^^^^ , and throw the rest away or put each little plant in its own big pot and grow them all on for a good yield of chillis.

I had some good chilli today

The pot is about the length of a DVD case if thats any help? lol

What do you suggest I do then? :?

Chicken update....not really much to update to be honest! They're all still thriving, 8 eggs a day pretty much....no complaints really! Oh, and the people at work like the eggs! :-D And they're willing to buy some! lol

I will take some new pics at some point....

Carefully take out all but two. Use a little fork or something. If you want to you can put one or two of the 'discards' into a new pot of compost of their own - otherwise throw them away. The two that you keep in the pot should be nice strong plants , it doesn't really matter too much but it will be best if they are a good distance apart. Check that they are still anchored nicely by pressing down gently on the compost around them.If they look as if they're going to fall over because they have been so crowded together, tie each gently to an adjacent stick.
Water from below at first and hey presto - lots of weeks , with a weekly feed and keeping them moist, later - chillis!!

Good - update on chickens. Glad that all is going well. I'm still subscribed to that thread!!

Yup, south-facing windows and the sills are about 8 inches deep so plenty of room. The tomatoes are Moneymaker, my dad gave me a few plants a couple of months ago and just followed his instructions.

they are practically triffids! ;-)

Well, one of them keeps 'spitting' something at me and shouting "Feed me!" I guess it's just a hot (tempered) chilli... ;-)

It certainly is, mate! As (I think) Chesso said if you leave a few in the big pot you have and take the rest (when they have a couple of proper pairs of leaves on them) out with a small plug of soil around each one you take out. Then you can transplant these into small pots of around 10cm and see how they grow, then after they grow a few weeks transferring them into pots that are 15cm and then finally after a few more weeks into one about 20cm across. I ended up with 19 plants (out of 20 seeds planted) and gave 7 of them away to friends. I used the guide on this site to grow mine, but I'm sure the ones others have posted will be pretty similar.

chilefarm.co.uk/gro…tml

As mine are indoors I've had to pollinate them using a dampened artist brush to transfer pollen over from plant to plant, the guide I used said you can almost get 100% of the flowers forming a chilli if you do it that way.

Good luck!

Tomatoes in the greenhouse , four days ago. The little ones are 'Sungold' and I thought that they may have been ready, so I picked them. I'm the same every year - they weren't ready then but if I had left them they would soon be sweet and tasty!! The big ones - going to be red and round - are no-where near ready.

Hi Chesso,

Took some updated photos of the tomatoes and peppers/chillis:

Peppers just starting to turn colour, still small, but they're supposed to go purple when ripe.
