Not necessarily they have free valuation days plus you could always offer to send them a picture.
Heres one link from a very reputable auction house.
    bonhams.com/how…82/
He may have just got very lucky some people do
If they are found to be genuine as nowadays there are some incredible fakes out there
The pattern for some reason looks familiar to me but need to do some more research.

    Try here.

Bonhams have a very good reputation but if your not happy with the valuation you could always get a second opinion did you speak to someone or just sent the email

Thank you for your email enquiry about your cup and saucer, which has been forwarded to the ceramics and glass department at Bonhams in New Bond Street.

Your cup and saucer is English porcelain, circa 1860-70 in date, and in the style of Minton pottery. The number on the base is likely to refer to the pattern number. Whilst attractive, sadly there are simply no buyers for pieces such as this, as modern lifestyles, dishwashers and microwaves have rendered them obsolete now. A complete tea set in this pattern would probably fetch much less than 50 pounds at auction, so I am afraid your two cups have a small decorative value only
