Hi all, let me first start by saying im completely clueless about computers and anything techy! i cant even link up the dvd player to the telly!!
im after a laptop thing for Mr bunny for his birthday and came across chromebooks?! in particular...this one....
    Toshiba CB30-102 Intel® Celeron® Processor, 2Gb RAM, 16Gb Solid State Drive, Wi-Fi, 13.3 inch Chromebook - Silver

please can someone answer my questions....
whats the difference between a chromebook and a normal laptop?
does it have a slot where a disc goes in? if not how would he put music on it from his pc?
can you stick a mouse in it?
would it be good for watching you tube, normal internet browsing and emails?
Mr bunny enters a lot of competitions also.....can you open multiple tabs on the browser on this? and would it have some kind of auto fill like our pc does??
What does solid state drive mean? compared to..??
is it enough memory etc ram or whatever it is for his type of usage?
sorry i hope this makes sense!

whats the difference between a chromebook and a normal laptop? - smaller / ligther / much faster boot up times

does it have a slot where a disc goes in? if not how would he put music on it from his pc? no but can transfer data with USB stick - transfering over a network connection is not so easy - or of course use teh device as it is intended - have all you data on The Cloud

can you stick a mouse in it? - er .... yes USB mouse

would it be good for watching you tube, normal internet browsing and emails? normal browsing and emails are just like any other PC is you are used to using Google Chrome browser - YouTube works just fine

Mr bunny enters a lot of competitions also.....can you open multiple tabs on the browser on this? and would it have some kind of auto fill like our pc does?? - yep - just like Google Vhrome browser

What does solid state drive mean? compared to..?? SSD = solid state drive - so no hard drive as such so storage on the ChromeBook is limited - that where you use Cloud Storage

is it enough memory etc ram or whatever it is for his type of usage? yes for sure - if you have a good wif connection then all will be good

Transfering files over a network is easy - right click the folder (of the files you want to share over a network) and select properties then select Sharing (at the top) and chose your method of sharing

All my mp3's, my videos, my docs, my pic stored on my 1tb harddisk can be accessed from my Android SmartTV device, my mobile and my laptop

    Should I Buy a Chromebook?

Another issue that could influence your decision about getting a … Another issue that could influence your decision about getting a Chromebook is the prevalence of Internet connectivity. Chromebooks are designed to have a heavy reliance on the Internet, which means that many apps simply won’t work if you’re out of Wi-Fi range. There are a growing number of “offline” Chrome apps, which can work without Internet connectivity, including Gmail and Google Drive. However, offline mode isn’t enabled by default, so you’ll have to install a few plugins in order to access your email or documents sans the Web.

Have a read of this article

The big difference between a laptop and chromebook is the operating system - Chrome OS is a Linux based OS with more in common with Android than MS Windows. He won't be able to run things like Skype and Windows games but there will be Chrome or Android apps that do similar tasks.

Your NAS should be setup to share files as it's a Network-attached storage - either you've not set your NAS correctly or your C720 (whatever that is) has restrictions on accessing "shared media"

That's it! My life (or as far as technical and IT things are concerned) is absolutely full of thingys, wotsits, thingummyjigs and thingymabobs! :D:p

    Just my opinion here...

I would approach the question from the other angle i.e. what do you think your husband would actually want and need?

If you know he needs a regular laptop because of the features it has e.g. DVD player, big hard disk etc. then that's what you should get.

If he's a techy person and he already has another computer then you may be ok getting a Chromebook as that would be a bit different from what he usually has and he might like it.

If you want something for media consumption (watching films, email, web browsing) then maybe even a tablet or ipad?

I am the techy person in my house (hence the Tux the penguin avatar) but I have been pleasantly surprised in the past by family members buying things that I would not have necessarily picked out for myself, precisely because I buy for my needs and they buy slightly more unusual things that I might like.

You know your husband better than any of us (I hope!) so only you know whether to ask him what he needs or trust your instincts.

TL;DR - what does he need and want?

Not sure I fully understand your question but will explain what I have

I have a Medion PC (any pc will do the same) - I added an SSD to improve performance and installed Win7 and used my existing 1tb harddrive for storage/backups

On the 1tb harddrive I have folders called My Documents, My Music, My Videos etc each folder is "shared" on local network (for security I also use password protection but on other devices enter the password one time only)

I have an Android SmartTV device using either ES Explorer or other I can access any of the shared files

I have a Moto G Android phone (same instructions as above)

I have a laptop running Win7 again it has access to play any of my shared files

My nephew can park his car outside (if I'm not there) and login on his mobile or laptop (he also has the password) and he can access my shared files - but if there is no access he can powerup my pc (using WakeMeOnLan) and then access the files.

Using Windows OS for file sharing is straightforward you just need to know how to password protect and access those shared files. I haven't the spare money or need for a NAS (Network-Attached Server) as everything works just fine for my setup
