Circumnavigating O2 wifi-calling restriction outside of EU using nordvpn with an iPhone.

I'm presently abroad and have iPhone and O2 tariff.

This procedure works flawlessly for me. I have hired a portable wifi unit to tether multiple devices.

  • Phone constantly on airplane mode
  • Set Nordvpn to UK
  • Reboot phone

Phone boots up in airplane mode, nordvpn on and wifi-calling active.

I don't quite know why, but sometimes (4 times within a week) thew wifi-calling sign goes, and the re-boot always brings it back imm

I have checked my o2 app and no charges. sadly no wifi texting with O2, and I'm unsure how the procedure would work with other providers or other phones.

why don't you just call using whatsapp or viber or some other VOIP service that will just work?!

Because not everyone has WhatsApp and it doesn’t cater for landline numbers. It also means that when someone calls, you can receive the call even when airplane mode is on.

It does work, but doesn't it mean you can't use mobile data then?
