Try making yourself homeless and then apply for a job. You would be amazed what can happen to someone people. How about a break up in a relationship and the guy moves out into a bedsit. He then loses his job. It doesn't take too much imagination to see how that could lead to homelessness. There was a great documentary about this once and if my memory serves many homeless people once lead lives like you and me.

Seems like a good idea but how is this a hot deal?
They will be turning up in droves with marks & spencer bags to empty.
How can you not vote this hot? Well done
This is really good. I was a little concerned about abuse by freeloading cheapskates but the use of traceable key cards is great.

Well it's obviously HOT to any of the fake homeless of Nottingham who will see it on their contract phones or home computer.
The sentiment is excellent, but you know there will be scumbags who just take the mickey out of it. People who don't really need it, but fancy a freebie. I hope I am wrong.
I'm not homeless but I will pretend to be for free food
should be in misc
its a nice idea, but Not a deal, plenty of other more appropriate sites to post this .....
Bahh Humbug kick them when they are down, I suppose it makes some of you feel successful
Here in France its illegal for supermarkets to throw away food but also in France everyone ignores the law. There is always a queue of people at 5am delving through the bins for food before the bin men get there. These people have cars and dont look homeless to me, they take boot fulls. So much for it going to the people who need it most.
be better of stacking it with crack pipes, spoons and booze.... fed up with this something for nothing society, that thinks the working class should provide for them, if we were all socialists, we'd be mega screwed...
Great Idea - Well Done for posting - Hopefully this will be rolled out in other cities - One would hope it won’t be abused BUT? - It should also reduce street beggars, most of whom are not homeless but spoil it for genuine ones
Free food has to be a hot deal. Kids get your coats on!
Great cause. Nottingham is also hosting a music festival in aid of homelessness.

So busy trying to be clever/cynical that you haven't read the article have you?

Here's the bit that you didn't read/understand...

"Up to 100 homeless people will be able to ‘purchase’ three free items a day from the machine using a traceable key card."

It's the third paragraph in the article so wasn't that hard to find.

Merry Christmas to you too you miserable fkker, don't forget to kick the homeless guy's dog when you see him and may you never fall on hard times yourself.

Not every homeless person is homeless due to drugs or drink. Bit of a selfish comment really
about time there was a good idea, although i can see people abusing it.
Great idea, let's hope it is not abused too much and reaches the right people.

And a million people who are not students can claim they are via an NUS card.
You don't purchase something free & there are tens of thousands of supposedly homeless people who return home nightly to a warm bed, fire & food.

Strange

Indeed I can only assume that is a Labour council
the Tory one here spent the whole tiny homelessness budget (and yes it is a problem despite the area being well beyond posh)
On two new council jobs.

Problem is ,while I have so much sympathy with those who have genuinely fallen on hard times , there are also so many who have been denied access to the benefit culture they were brought up with, but are fit and well.

We should of course support the disabled and those genuinely unable to work - but how do we differentiate between these people and the bone idle

Housing benefit used to be paid directly to the landlord (be it Council , Housing association or Private ) . Now it is paid direct to the recipient so they have now the choice of paying the rent , going down the pub or buying a supersize telly

Of course its the "Immigrants " fault - millions voted to get out of the EU , many to stop the "Immigrants " nicking our jobs ! Yet even in hard UKIP areas (East Lincolnshire , the Fens etc) Farmers cannot get "British workers" to do a fair days work for the UK minimum wage - those potential workers would appear to prefer begging on the streets and using a food bank than committing to freely available work .

I know its an over simplification , but somehow we should reserve our (and the systems) sympathies for the genuinely disadvantaged - not those who have just rolled over from the state sponsored benefit culture to the charity based one .

A quick search tells us the council is:

20 labour
16 independent
7 Tory
1 ukip

Leader is independent, deputy is Tory. I'm not sure what that makes it.

You are right remember reading about it now
during the Westminster by-election (how long ago does that seem but just this year !)
a Tory run council with the support of the independents
the theme of the piece was how the Tories were shafting the indies and blaming everything on them
but the previous Labour administration didn't get much praise either lol

If you would of read the article you would've seen its being supplied by the charity Action Homeless, nothing to with politics.

But hey why not take the story for the positive thing it is and mention the Tories or Brexit instead, this is misc.

Trust me, the reason can be as long as your arm.
MSK.7 h, 7 m ago

Too many possibilities to list.

Let me start off this list (as long as your arm), applies to those (but not exclusive) who have tiny or no savings of a month's worth and are in low income with no assets:-

1. One is on disability benefits, pays bedroom tax, just paid for a repair bill for something
2. One has just been laid off a minimum wages job, applying on benefits
3. One is waiting for working tax credit (for weeks)
4. One is divorced, paying maintenance to children and ex- ; not enough money coming in per month
5. One was a soldier, suffering post was stress syndrome, now living on the street
6. One is elderly, living on state pension, heating just one room, fuel poverty, money to eat or to keep warm.
7. One has no home, no fix abode, cannot get a job because of no fix abode, living on begging and sleeps rough
8. One has just split up with ex- , chucked out of house, living here and there...
9. One just had a row with parents, 30 but still living at home, got chucked out of the house, now wandering in the street with a bit of cash but hardly any savings, keeping some for emergency (but hungry for a day or two is not emergency),
10. The boiler has broken down and needs £500 repairs, spent nearly all of the cash this month,

..just a starter for ten

11. One is 55+, just made redundant after a long career, not IT literate with not soo good GCSE maths and English, no savings as was on low income job, find it hard to write a good CV, 1 in 100 applicants gets a job in local area, get sanctioned and job seekers allowance stopped..... (in 2010 I visited an office for rehab people to get help, there was just one PC there for people to do their CV and job applications, it was a 486 CPU desktop with 256MB? memory with a monochrome 14" monitor that run Windows XP SP3.)

..and so on ad infinitum.

So easy to answer it because of who we are, rather than share with all we celebrate the bully. In a couple of days time I will fly to Singapore and spend the next six months travelling around because I can afford it and enjoy all the people I meet. To answer the question who chooses to go hungry. Simple those who you chose to do so.
