Want to start clay pigeon shooting. How do I go about getting started? I am an absolute novice and have no idea what I need (apart from a gun obviously). Any help would be much appreciated. TIA

In a club, you have to have a session training to use the house guns. Then there's the cost of using the house guns and you're shells. Not cheap!

This is completely different if you go to a farmer shoot though. Usually around £6 for about 24 pulls

PS Don't let them blag giving you a 410 shotgun and telling you to shoot (you'll know it's a 410 as it looks like a toy gun with mini cartridges)

.

OP, buy yourself a gun from your local pub and head to the nearest pottery shop, proceed to shoot anything that looks remotely like a pigeon.

simples

indeed

A good place to start would be your local gunsmiths - ask them there if they know of any local clubs. Also they might direct you to a shooting school so you can have a few lessons and see how much you like it and try out a few different guns.
You will not be able to buy cartridges without a gun licence so you'll have to buy/use everything at your local club.
You might find a shooting jacket - one with no sleeves and suede sholder pads - useful and one of the first things you buy.
Then, if you are serious, a gun licence - cost me £50, you have to fill in forms and a policeman will come round to your house to check out if you are a crazy person or not and how safe your house is etc.

You'll have to have the shotgun in a sercure holding area i.e. cabinet or chest chained to a main beam in your loft and your shells in a safe or such like.

If you any imprisonment sentences over 3 months you will not be allowed to have one full stop. When applying you must declare everything from your past (including mental health related medical conditions) and get reference. Sometimes if they don't grant you one you can reapply and they'll say yes (usual suggestion is 3 months)

If you are going for a shotgun licences you need to have a valid reason for wanting one. Either enrol in a club or get you local farmer to write you a letter saying you can hunt vermin i.e. rabbits etc on his land

If you are applying for a shotgun licence you could also go for a full fire arms licence so you can have rifles or air guns over 12lb energy however it's harder to get one as you have to state the exact calibre.

Hope this helps

OP why not go for a session at your local gun club, after all you may not like it once you have done it.

I have done it and really enjoyed it. Would definitely do it again.

Where abouts are you located?
