How much does your area have? A survey rated areas of the country and Stanford-Le-Hope came top with Troon in second.

But bottom of the list was Walsall. So how much do you think your area has (don't feel the need to name it if you feel uncomfortable)

    Says Leigh-on-sea is top?
Stanford-Le-Hope is 7th, used to live there when i was younger.

My current town is umm, much much lower

Also states Barking & Dagenham as bottom too.

    MISC will always be top

Bottom is Walsall? Well we know who to blame eh, Stu? X)

Population of UK 64.1 million. Number of people that took part in the survey 24,000.

To put that into perspective, 1% of the entire population is 640,000.

The small town of Newry holds over 27,000 residents.

Yeah, not taking much notice of this.

That's happiest overall. Community spirit is one of the deciding factors and Stanford-Le-Hope is top in that. It's also 4th for feeling like you belong and feeling like you can be yourself.

Walsall is bottom of community spirit, second from bottom overall and also bottom for culture. Also bottom for being yourself whatever that means.

    Well that's not a Stanford-Le-Hope spirit. X)

Actually you didn't read the OP. Walsall is bottom for community spirit which Is the subject of this topic.

it's brilliant nuggets of info like this that will help me decide between Handsworth or Sandbanks

There's a second list from the ONS about most deprived areas. Maybe there's some correlation

    I wouldn't class a whole city/town as a community - p**s poor excuse "of a survey"

A community is an estate or village or similar

How do you survey community spirit?

My town is Pembroke Dock, I found interesting that the poorer areas had more community spirit than the more well off areas,

For instance, when we had the Queen's Jubilee this area had the whole estate out with tables and bunting, a massive party and it got a bit loud, but I was very envious of them all getting together and joining in the fun.. where as my street (no one is rich but comfortable) barely speak to each other, everyone politely waves on the street but thats it.

Bonfire night is another the estate has a big bonfire, all the kids with sparklers. They have tables and chairs setup with BBQ's going. adn fireworks at the end.. reminds me of where I came from and I miss being in that environment. im tempted this year to just walk down with the kids.

We have a fair every year too in the Town Centre in Pembroke they literally shut the town centre down for the weekend, divert traffic etc, In fact its on next weekend, and everyone literally everyone goes, its great fun no matter the age there is something for everyone, its a big community event.

Its something I remember fondly as a kid in the 80's school fetes and fun runs etc, but as the ed of the 90's came and the 00's it all disappeared, very sad part of teh reason I left the city life behind. it has to be said that community is far better where I am now.

I dont think its just the area its a lot to do with class too.

Also fourth in the list of most deprived areas too. Again, maybe there's a link between low community spirit and deprivation.

Ah, I see now. The motivation behind posting this 2 month-old survey now is to have a dig at member(s) who live in Walsall. Got it.

The willingness of some to take offence on behalf of others or themselves really is something.

But for the sake of community spirit I'll nix the thread on paranoia lest some get upset. X)

I'm confused, HEAWD. You have said that I am on your ignore list along with all the other members that have exposed you, but you keep on replying. Is this another fib?

Wellington's an odd one, worst in the country for feeling unsafe but in the top 20% for community spirit and friendly people.

Maybe they have very polite, courteous muggers there.

Nope, I took you off when you said something we found common ground on the other day. Since then you seem to want to talk more about me than the topics which is fine but might bore others.

How do you survey community spirit?

Almost 24,000 people completed our survey

looks like we are not big enough to be included suits me

Not surprised Cheltenham is near the top
and the suburban wasteland that is Swindon near the bottom

You cannot quantify it; so I would suggest you cannot create a meaningful survey unless the responses are binary ("Yes" or "No").

A set of twins of the same gender, living together from birth to the date when both were surveyed (individually), may hold different opinions because of just a single external stimuli that the other sibling has not experienced.

"Do you feel safe?" or "Do you have a sense of belonging" are just misguided questions.

Even with a "Yes" or "No" response being captured (& ignoring/dismissing anything other than these responses from the statistics), the levels of anybody's personal safety will differ based on the individual's character & life experience.

Everybody will not interpret the questions in exactly the same way &, if offering some form of numeric/ranked (say, from 1 to 100) value as an answer, each responder will not be able to provide a meaningful answer that is comparable with everybody else's response.
