Run it in safe mode ( hit F8 when booting )
This will usually identify the problem for you............

Have you left a disc in any drive? Sometimes this affects startup.

If not, do as Simon012 suggests. Then restart the computer, if it works great. If this fails redo the advice but try to do a system restore to a date when you know it was working.

asks for help then goes offline? My grandad has this on his computer, his hard drive had corrupted you might need to do a scandisk /r in DOS that is somehow get into DOS using a boot disc then type scandisk /r

Sounds like you Windows install has gone corrupt. Your best bet is to do a repair install of windows.

Restart in Safe Mode (press F8 immediately as Windows starts to boot)

If it starts then goto 'Start' then 'Run' and type 'msconfig' click on the startup tab and 'Disable All' - this stops programs (and some malware/spyware) from starting and causing problems. Restart.

If that works then backup your data and do a fresh install with the Windows CD.

Poor water on it. It needs a dwink.

as for me going off line i have three children to get to school thought i would ask befor i go not sure why i have to explain though

All the advice above is very generic. If you list the errors that are appearing then a specific solution could be found (rather than you wasting your time trying various options)

Because we all pride ourselves on answering questions promptly, having to wait for answers to ours is damn annoying!

Very true. Could be anything wrong but based on the limited information that's what I'd try.

If it's a desktop computer it could be something as simple as the hard drive cable coming loose.
