    Computer advice please

Can anyone help please, We were using the main PC and we had a small power cut, we restarted the PC fine and closed it down fine, so we rebooted to use PC again, as we were rebooting again we had another power cut.

Now we cant get past the microsoft corporation black page with the timer line going across, it just wont go past this.

We have tried starting windows normally and also launching the restart page, but no luck either way. Can anyone help please?

does it give you the option to system restore?

    Banned

try using safe mode (press f8 - keep tapping it) at restart, and choose safe mode

then go into all programs/accesories and find system restore
and go back to yesterday or similar

last time a power cut hit me, it ruined my desktop completely, yours it sounds like just a corrupt windows, at worst it means a reinstall

sounds like windows is totally corrupted

if you have the system disk on a cd, you can put that in and find the system repair option (it will copy over any corrupted system files)

if not, you need a complete reinstall, and your machine might (should) have a full reinstall (factory default) option, but you will lose all your data

    depends on make and model

you really need to find the instructions on the makers website for that machine/OS combo

usually starts by pressing f12 though, and factory image reinstall or something similar sounding

try a few other f-key numbers, (not f8) or f1 or f2 though

a system menu needs to come up, and away you go

dam lol no luck! I will be searching tomorrow for the instructions, I just found the back up disk from last time, so thats 1 good thing!

if you put it in then restart the computer it should boot it up and you can re instal

We must do somewhere as we bought this pc new from Tescos with the windows already on the PC, I will have to have a good look around tomorrow

if its xp but most windows are similar enough to adapt
    find your windows xp disk,
put it in the drive and reboot
watch for the message "press any key to boot from cd" and hit one
choose recovery console/command prompt from the next options
in the console type chkdsk /r then press enter and let it do its thing, should fix it or at least allow you the option or repair install

    This is easy to sort:

bump for any more advice please

    still cant get it on!

did you find your installation disks?

if it didnt come with any disks then it may have a built in recovery feature.
Whats it the make / model of the PC?

Also if you know someone else with a windows XP disk then you may be able to repair this problem using the chkdsk function.

I found the windows disk, booted PC from the disk, it went to blue page uploadin a few bits along the bottom then another blue page saying there has been a problem and please try and reboot on the chkdsk, but I wouldnt have a clue how to get there lol

no luck at all, off to take it to PC repair shop now, cant handle this netbook! its too small and keeps crashing my facebook lol

if you got your windows disk then i wouldnt take it to a pc repair shop because your just going to be paying someone 40 quid to run a setup for you..

it just sounds like your choosing the wrong options when booting from your windows disk.

If the repair windows option hasnt work then just choose to reinstall it...

I have had similar problems in the past.

all i had to do was fully remove the AC power cord from the PC, wait 30 seconds, then re-boot.

I work for a PC repair shop :-)

Fix I would try would be.

    1. Boot from your XP install CD (try pressing F8 or F10 to select a boot device, you should select your CD drive as the boot device - or it may boot from CD automatically depending on the way it's been set up, you'll know because you'll see "Press any key to boot from CD....."
    2. When it's boot the CD, press 'R' for repair.
    3. This will take you into a DOS looking enviroment. It may ask you to logon to Windows, to do this you may need to choose an install if prompted (usually C:\Windows), and you may need to put in your administrator password (if you don't know just don't type anything and press enter, see if that works).
    4. When you finally get to C:\Windows> type (without inverted commas) 'chkdsk /r' and press enter.
This should run a chkdsk and repair any errors.
    5. When finished type 'exit' and press enter.
    6. Take the CD out of the drive.
    7. See if it'll boot windows now.
    8. If not, you may have to do a repair install, but if you manage to do the above you're already half way there...

took it to PC Repair shop Tried it all, He has promised me though that if its going to be any more than the £35 quoted to do a normal fix then to not bother as I would rather Ebay this one and buy a new tower!

Thank you all for your advice though, Just hope it works tomorrow when I get it back lol

I may be talking out of my bottom here, but when we had this happen it was the harddisk. They don't like power surges at all, and our power cut twice in rapid succession. I lost LOADS of stuff on that disk, but it's definitely taught me to back up, back up, and then back up again.
