OK - lets have a think! Ive had my nippers PC on ice for about 3 weeks whilst I tried to sort out some bits to run the recovery console! Trust me - its a pain!

Lets hope this will get round it!

Firstly, does it try to load the operating system? ie does windows start - or a blank screen with the dos message?

If it does start, press F8 and try to load "safe mode". Or failing that "last know working configuration".

If the OS isnt seen, its bios time.

On bootup, press Del (or it may be F10)

Without seeing your bios, I cant be sure, but probably the second option, see if the hard drive is seen. If it isn't then check the connections (when unpowered!)

Give this a go for now...

when you turn on it gos to dark screen (like normal) saying its finding whatever, then it usually goes to windows but it goes straight to this screen that i have mentioned above, the screen changes to quick for me to see what its saying:oops:

External or internal ? Depending on the age of your PC, there should be a bios option to allow for booting from a usb device, if it's internal change the boot ordering. If that doesn't work, remove the cable from the (broken) drive and leave just the good one in.

Ok, look for startup options - it depends on the make/model of PC, you won't do any harm by looking (as long as you don't save anything). You should see something that says boot order c:, cdrom floppy etc under one of the options.

Change that to point to your working CDRW.

the only thing i recognise is floppy and cdrom, changing it to cdrom is no good as it wont open for me to put disk in, cd/rw isnt on it

OK - it sounds like its not just your CDRom (whats one of those!!!!:giggle: ) is knackered, but your Hard drive as well (as its not being seen.)

Open up and check its all connected properly. Failing that.... New Hard Drive? New machine?? (Is is Xmas - and it does sound old if its got a CR Drive!) :whistling:

am i supposed to be in standard CMOS Set up or Advanced Setup?

Hmm, okay - without seeing your setup - one last thought, if you're comfortable with opening your PC up, you could try swapping the IDE (ribbon like ) cable from the broken CD over to the CDRW (which is working). Leave everything else, then reboot, making sure that CDROM is set to start up.

When you say recognise, does it say anything else?

There should be an option in the first menu.... Does it show the hard drive there? (It will be shown as something like WD200x40 - ie a series of letters and numbers that is how the HD is destinguished from any other HD. - It wont say Hard drive in other words!

yes, that is where i was looking, i managed to change it so thats what booted up, but forget the cdrom only opens once in a blue moon :w00t: but when you scroll through options it hasnt got cd/rw unless its called something else

I mentioned earlier the problems with my littluns PC.

I finally found out the cause - and it wasnt obvious. It has 2 SATA Hard drives. The second drive was knackered. It was only because Windows hung on a reinstall (and recovery wouldnt work - because it needs SATA drivers first, that I found out.)

The problems you describe here, can be simple - or a real pig to work out where the problem lies.

in standard CMOS set up it says

Pri master :user

Sassie

In the bios, can you see what version of bios it is (and "make")

It will help to work out the screen layouts. They are all different depending on which it is. It'll make things easier to guide you around it.

have you knocked the cable out when doing the ram?

When you first get the bios screen, it should say which it is.

eg Pheonix, Award, Ami etc and a version number

yes

Change to auto

It should detect your HD and give info on it

Make a note of the user settings (just in case you need to go back to it!)

Edit... back in a mo.... just need to sort something!

it says ambios simple setup utility - version 1.21.06
(C)2000 AMERICAN MEGATRENDS, Inc. all rights reserved

I had this problem a year ago,.
You can install windows again and it will work but within a month or so you will get the message again.
After months of messing about i cant quite remeber but it was either my hard drive or my motherboard that was corrupted.
I replaced both and its been fine since.

EDIT:I think it was my Harddrive

OK, I just had a google for

windows could start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

And it does figure a fair bit! Not much help though to solve your problem.

As we've said, it really could be anything.

When you bootup, can you keep your finger pressed on F8 and hopefully (if your hard drive is seen) you will get the option to go to safe mode.

Can you try this first.

Original Poster Banned

i cant get into safe mode, it would help if i could freeze the screen that comes up so i could see what it says:-(

Banned

Safe mode ain't gonna work for that problem

In your bios look for boot priority & select the cd as the first device & harddrive as the next boot device, then save and exit.

Pop the setup cd in the drive and boot from that.
When it says install or press "R" to repair, select install (Don't select repair using the recovery console).
Wait for it to get to the next screen and then select the xp installation you want to repair from the list and press "R".
That should get it backup and running, but I would check the hard drive and memory after.

Is it text? There is a way to do that. Not sure what key stroke it is though! (sorry!)

SO have you managed to check the cables to see if everything is seated ok?

One thing I would suggest (brainstorm - since Ive just mentioned my own plight with the dodgy Hard drive!)

Try booting the machine with the cables taken from the CD drive. We know thats suspect anyway - and it could be what the problem is. (My nippers machine wouldnt boot - but then would with the second drive unplugged. It took me 3 weeks to work that one out.... so this could take time! ):giggle:

But he is correct that it may come down to trying to use Recovery console. And that is a pain in the backside as I found out! Luckily though you have IDE drives. Try using it with SATA drives - it dont work (or at least not without a lot of bugg*ring about.)

Switch it off and use the manual eject on the cd drive.
There is a tiny hole that you can put a paperclip in and make the drive open.
Sometimes its really close to the tray, Then insert the cd, power up and see if it will close the draw when it powers up and boot from cd.

i have tried that, the draw makes all the noise and motions of its going to open but nothing happens, it has always had a cd left in it and worked ok, but dopey me forgot and took cd out and closed it, now cant get the bleedin thing back out:-(
