I'm hoping some of you computer experts out there might be able to help me. Having a real nightmare time with my computer at the moment. First it packed up which transpired to be the power supply. Now it is running really really slowly. After switching it on, it takes about 10 minutes before it lets you click on anything and once you do, it takes an age for it to come up. I've run about 3 different virus checkers and none coming up with anything...............any one got any ideas before I take it and throw it out the window!!
Cheers

Yeah - do you mean throw it against the wall????? I'd rather chuck it outside - less damage. LOL.

Ok what kind of info do you want. Its a desktop. Still got over half memory space free. Already tried the defrag thing.

what version of windows, what programs do you have running all the time

Original Poster

its windows xp.

if you pres ctrl -alt - del
at the same time, this will open the task manager, click on process, you will see what programs are running, are there any which are using a lot of cpu, if so what are they

There is only one which has got anything apart from zeros in the cpu column and that is System Idle Process which is fluctuating between 95 and 99.

try formatting and starting again

if the pc still slow then replace your memory

Registry cleaner?
btw there should be more than just one thing in Task Manager.

Google it. i rec RegCure. i have an ashampoo one that finds a fraction of the supposed probs of RegCure.

like for instance 1st run of regcure found thousands of probs with my pc.

oh you've logged off. bye bye.

how are you getting on with it

Thanks for your info. I'll give that a go. Cheers

you say you have tried 3 virus checkers?
not all at once i hope most are meant to be used on their own,
having two av programs installed simultaneously is a no no and can cause this effect

Supposed is correct, most of those thousands of 'problems' will just be leftover entries and not problems at all. The registery is like a pad of paper. Having lots of the sheets used might cause you to take slightly longer to find a blank one but otherwise won't cause a problem at all. It's only if someone's made holes in it or there's problems with the binding that normal use is affected.

Hmm, so if the system idle process is registering 95%+ then it's not something using up the CPU causing the slowdown. How much free memory (not hard drive space) does task manager say you have (I think the appropriate tab is called performance in Windows XP)?

Supposed is correct,

Yep I'm sure some are bogus/or no consequence to make you feel the soft is protecting you however although its a long time ago it did act as a philip when i 1st ran it on my pc at the time.

dont format - way too drastic at this stage

simpler to just reinstall windows and see how that goes. You wont lose any data.

Reading the OP you say it takes 10mins before you can click anything when you start up. The 1st thing that comes to mind is that windows is staring to many programmes to start in the background when windows starts up.

What i would do is either use the windows method & go in to msconfig click on start up & disable all the programmes that you dont need to start when windows comes on but there lots of other options in there & if you dont feel sure about it there might be another way which you might perfer.

Donwload CCleaner its free. filehippo.com/dow…er/ run the cleaner, run the registry option & then click on to tool then startup you will see a list of programmes that starts up with window's disable the ones you dont need to use when windows starts up. An all being well your PC should be faster to use next time it boots up

Also how much ram do you have in the PC as if you not got a lot but want to run a few programmes in the background you might want to install some extra ram

edit: just though to sort of prove what i think it is, load up task manager again after you boot the pc up & look at what the process count is. if its around 35/40ish you wont need to disable programmes on start up but do the 1st two things with ccleaner as that will defo still help but if it alot higher you defo need to be disabling some programmes on start up.

also run this programme as its found crap on peoples pc's that some anti-virus misses download.cnet.com/Mal…ton

Let us know who you get on

well thats wrong for starters. System idle process shouldnt use any cpu. Just reinstall windows. only takes an hour.

Sorry mate you are wrong on that, System idle should ALWAYS be using some of the CPU in task manager its there to show you that the CPU is not running at 100% & if system idle process is at 95/100% it means the PC is not doing much at the time & is ok from that point of view
