Hi

Tried running COD5: World At War on my PC last night and during the opening movie sequence the video was lagging and the my PC cut out. Turned it back on and it came up CPU overheat error but then booted back up fine. Im guessing it overheated as it was under full load but still it shouldnt do this should it?

Spec:
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
Intel Pentium Dual Core 3.4Ghz
2gb 667 DDR2 RAM
320gb sata2 hdd
512mb 9800GT graphics

Also in a thermaltake tsunami case with plenty of fans so it should be well ventilated?

Any ideas why its doing this? Should I upgrade the CPU fan?

Thanks

you will porb need a bigger heatsink for your cpu

^ As he say's

You could open the case and get rid of all the dust to improve the airflow etc...

Also you could alter the resolution of the game and Texture, Shadows etc.. To lighten the load on the PC.

Edit: (Must read post fully before replying)

Aftermarket CPU cooler with good thermal paste/grease.
Case fans with better airflow - quietpc.com/gb-…ans
Better cooling of other components inside the case E.g. exhaust fan next to gfx card

When you say plenty of fans - how many have you got? (A similar case on ebay has 120mm fans front & rear & a 90mm on the side)

The stock fan should function fine. It sounds like the CPU heatsink is not fitted correctly, perhaps not contacting the CPU fully. If it used to work fine, then make sure the CPU fan is working, and the heatsink it's self is not full of dust.

Thanks all for the help, think il start by getting new aftermarket heatsink & fan and get rid of all the dust (theres quite alot)

cheers +rep for all

Yeah it has been working fine for about 2 years and only seemed to cut out on that game. Il check its fitted and working correctly and get rid of any dust first.

What Pentium Dual Core is that, Penium D/EE (8xx/9xx) or overclocked E2XXX?
If Pentium D/EE, do not change the fan without changing cpu too as it's always got very hot and performs poorly. What motherboard have you got?

Pentium 'D' dual-cores at 3.4GHz run silly hot. Your CPU fan is probably a bit dusty and thats tipping it over the edge; take it off, clean the heatsink and CPU thoroughly, check fan still spins fine and use a good quality thermal paste when refitting (Arctic Silver or similar).

Quick question - Is the PC sitting in an enclosed space? Plenty of fans is good, but if they heat can't escape, it will still overheat. We resolved that problem by cutting holes in my desk and it's fine now :P Before that, I had the machine sitting out and on the floor to let the heat escape.

Try it and see?

I'm not sure exactly what model it is but its a Pentium D 3.4GHz, pretty sure they dont make them anymore. Its not overclocked though. Not sure what the motherboard is off the top of my head as im at work but if its not ]this its very similar.

Thanks jah128 think thats exactly what il do first before I buying anything new.

The PC isn't really in an enclosed space but it is sat on carpet with a sky box on top of it! Think it might be a good idea to move the sky box actually

The Pentium D's are notoriously hot-running, you're doing well to have had it for a couple of years and not had the problem before - make sure you do a good job of cleaning it and use a good thermal paste or the problem will not be solved

(Actually in all likelyhood it probably has been 'clock-throttling' for quite a while - if it gets too hot it slows down the core-speed to let it cool down a bit, which means it won't run at 3.4GHz for long anyway!)

Add me on COD5 when you get it running! ID - Birdyboyuk

Ok cheers is ]this decent thermal compound? I need to get it from scan becasue i'm ordering somthing else and free delivery.

This 'clock-throttling' sounds about right aswel, recently ive been getting lag on other games like Counter Strike: Source which I didnt use to and it cant be the graphics struggling can it being a 9800gt?

Think its probably about time to upgrade the mobo and the CPU to a core 2 quad soon anyway but il see how this pans out after a clean first

Yep, AS5 is one of the best
