really....cool...so it wouldnt be much faster if i had 500 something and an extra gigabyte of memory

my dad doesnt also realise the colour is glossy pink! that scores some points! haha..nah he just said the icore (if thats what is called) is far supeior and that pentium is old technology so why buy old technology

While it is true that Intel are gradually phasing out the Pentium name (very slowly) it is still shipped in thousands of laptops.

It is being replaced by the "Core" range - Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7.

So the pentium is not "cack" (in fact it is probably Intel's best ever selling computer CPU) although they have used the name over a whole generation of CPUs.

This laptop has a BluRay player which is quite rare, and 3Gb of memory which is reasonable.

Some people feel they need to "chase" new technology but it can cost you more to get the newest technology.

This laptop is fine for what you want to do with it.

3gb RAM will be plenty for what you need. Processor too

    500 what?

Not really anything you would notice in all fairness hun.

As guilbert53 said blu-ray means you can watch blu-rays on it without any problems.

It's pink so it's ideal also colour wise.

    Sony, good brand support.

You can always get your dad to upgrade it if needs be. Or buy an external hard drive for your storage needs.

    Just keep it clean.

This web site measures the performance of CPUs.

    cpubenchmark.net/cpu…php

For the Pentium 6100 it gets a power score of 1609 (higher the better) and a ranking of 328 (with 1 being the best cpu so lower the better)

The Core i3 330 (one of the new generation cpus) gets a power score of 1959 and a rank of 246.

So it is better, but to be honest you would hardly notice the difference.

your dad is talking crap tbh

you could get a £50 5 year old laptop which would quite happily browse the net / run office.

Happens, could always pick up a new battery for it, see most people use there laptops on power adaptors.

Your dad probably thinks Pentium is an old name, but it's not. The Pentium line of chips has been running for years and is still current. According to Intel's own website, the P6100 is a twin core chip and was launched in Q3 this year: ark.intel.com/Pro…175 - that's not exactly "old" technology. Granted it isn't as fast as the newer "Core" named chips, but a twin core chip with 3MB cache driving DDR3 1066MHz memory should be good enough for most purposes. It won't be a gamers machine, especially with the Intel graphics, but it should be more than adequate for word processing, email and web browsing!

it would be fine for what you want to do once the operating system was re-installed. New battery about £40, job done!

My laptop has a rubbish old Celeron, 40gb hdd, 2gb RAM (which I upgraded from 512) and runs everything I want it for, including Windows 7 and lightroom 2.6.

I've had it 3 years and was second hand when I got it.

The Pentium nomenclature isn't being phased out, nor being replaced by the Core i range. The Pentium 6100 is based on Arrandale architecture as used by the Core i3, i5, i7 and Celeron. Furthermore, the Pentium name is actually a re-introduction that co-exists with the Core i CPUs and its name usage is to denote the same architecture as the Core i CPUs but with reduced functionality to appeal to budget users. It's a similar case with Celeron too. It is the Core branding (not to be confused with the Core i) that is being phased out.

For the OP's info, the Pentium 6100 is a very capable processor indeed and uses the very latest state of the art features such as 32nm transistors for low power consumption, inbuilt memory controller (not available on Core processors such as Core 2 Duos), 3rd level of cache. Unlike its bigger brothers, it doesn't support virtualisation, Turbo Boost, etc which is why it is cheaper than i3, i5, i7.
