    Computer repair question

I've been given a friend's laptop which was having trouble booting (Black Screen of Death). That issue was solved by running system restore but now the laptop abruptly turns itself off and restarts once Vista has loaded. Sometimes it happens soon after it has booted, sometimes it happens after 10 mins or more.

I'm thinking it could be a hard disk or overheating problem so I want to run Chkdsk to see if the hdd has errors. This brings me to my question..
    - Can you boot from a XP disk, load up the Recovery Console and run Chkdsk from there (bearing in mind the OS on the laptop is Vista).. I don't have a Vista CD you see.

I've tried the "Ultimate boot CD" which was a big pile of turd. It had a few tools on there for hdd scanning but most were for specific makes of hdd. The Western Digital one (laptop has WD drive) didn't work and neither did any of the generic ones, they hung or weren't compatible with SATA hdds.

Urgh, sorry for the long winded question.. Anyone got any ideas?

You need to get a Vista cd.

Can you not download the iso from a torrent site and burn it? You don't need a CD key, just the CD itself.

You may even be able to download the ISO from M$, I'm not so sure on this one though.

Do you have a diagnostic disc or does the laptop have inbuilt diagnostics to check to see if it has any hardware issues?

Not 100% sure but can't you do this from a live linux cd?

I'd say it a memory problem....

Take it out and re-seat it and see if it makes any difference !

If not ...i'd try equivalent memory from another laptop ....if u have any !

is it getting hot, we had this issue and i stirpped it down and repasted all the heeat sinks and now its fine

I would download the Vista CD but I really don't have the time to spend ages on fixing it, if it's too big a problem I'll tell them to return it to Fujitsu Siemens or wherever they got it from.
Will check out the inbuilt diagnostics, if there is any but it's only a budget laptop - not sure it's going to have anything fancy..

Definitely worth a go. I was wondering this so will dig out a Ubuntu or Backtrack CD and see if they've got something on that'll help.

As above, not going to spend ages on this so definitely won't be looking to open it up although if it were my own, I certainly would.
I'll give Memtest a go though and see if it finds anything..

I haven't noticed anything personally but the owner did mention they thought it could be overheating so it's a possibility..

Thanks everyone for the replies, got some good info to go on here. Will pass on some of your more technical suggestions to the owner if she ends up taking it to a repair shop.
    Repped you all

have you tried starting in safe mode? Does it turn off when you have started it this way?

I would try reseating the dims of RAM. If you have 2 dims in the laptop, try just using one dim then the other!!! It does sound like a memory issue if you was getting a black screen to start off with!!
