computer shuts down when i type msconfig or command on search

lately my computer has been playing up on me. Might be because in the last week or so iv installed a new graphics card,500GB seagate hard drive and an extra 2GB of RAM.

Anyway whenever i type cmd or msconfig on the vista search feature, the msconfig box pops up and then all of a sudden it just restarts or shut downs. Its starting to get on my nerves now because i just tryed to download microsoft flight simulator trial versions from the microsoft website and it just loggs of and restarts.

I dont know if i change some settings somewhere on my computer, but has someone got any clue what this could be.:-(

Instead of doing it that way:

Go to Start Menu, Open the Accesories folder and click on the Run icon and try and do it from there.

p.s - And leave that computer alone. lol

i promise i want do nothing else to it lol.

anyway i just tried that syzable and it just restarted my computer.

do you think its doing it to protect the computer,i mean the computer might not have me registed as the administrator therefore thinks that a guest is trying to alter the computer, hence trying to protect its self. when i go into control and user accounts my account is the administrator but sometimes when im doing stuff on my computer it asks me for administrators priviledges and says do i want to continue,is this normal.

Yes it's normal for it to double check if you want to continue in vista.

The only thing that i can think of now with the restart is a driver compatability problem with your new graphics card that causes a restart when it tries to open a DOS window due to the change in resolution. Unfortunately you may need to do a system restore to a previous working setup. :-(

system restore that doesnt sound to good.iv not got the latest driver for my graphics card,if that might be the problem.i had problems downloading it so i just got the earlier edition im using catalyst 7.3 for vista

It could be as vista drivers are very unstable at the minute. Unfortunately if it is a driver problem the only way to cure it is to get rid of the driver that's causing the problem. Also may seem obvious but have you ran a virus check?

AFAIK a full computer crash/lockup can only be caused by hardware and its drivers. It's likely to be something new you've installed and the instability of the new vista drivers...

Will it start in safe mode.

    Original Poster

no when i choose the option to start in safe mode it just kept re directing me to the big white acer screen and then the page that aks me how i want to start my computer shortly followes after it

when you use the msconfig does it
    1.shut down as normal
    2.lock up
    3.switch off straight away
    4.you get the bsod

    Futher to the above:

There is a possibility that you may have overloaded the PSU - do you know what it is rated at?

What's the graphics card like? How does it compare to the earlier one.

    Just a though...

    Cheers, Dio

The only easy way is to open the case and have a look at the markings on the PSU.

    Cheers, Dio

I am also having problems with a 2007 Vista ready Tosh, and it shuts down for no apparent reason. I think it might have something to do with the processor rather than the PSU.

A good check on what you have on your machine is to download BELARC and see what you have and what you haven't, ]belarc.com

duckmagicuk2 gave you the right advise and it is not your PSU as everything would slow down rather than crash..
I`m afraid it is the long hard slog take everything out and test piece by piece although I tend to go with the graphics card driver not being compatible with Vista.

    Try this:
Insert your Vista DVD, press Windows + R, type in sfc /scannow (with the space), and press enter. It will proceed to check all system files for consistency and replace any that have become corrupt.

I go along with the thoughts that it is caused by a driver issue; however, an overloded PSU will cause random crashes / restarts.

Need to be a pretty poor PSU to crash on a harddrive,2gigs of ram and a graphics card

thanks everyone for the help. i did a full avg scan on my computer last night,it was running for 3 hours +,and found 377 i-worm/vb.gk viruses,so i stopped the scan and healed what it found and sent them all to the virus vault,i then uninstalled it and did download the trial version for NOD32 i think it was and that didnt do much,,just kept on saying error opening file.so i unistalled that, downloaded avg again.logged off and started in safe mode and then run the avg full system scan and found no threats.

Now im here, pecking my head in what to do. lol.

last night i unistalled everything for the radeon x1600 graphics card except te actual card inside my pc. Now im going to attempt to download the lastest driver for vista, the one what was causing me all the problems.

If im not back on here within 15 mins,it means my computer has probably crashed or something,or il be crying under my bed sheets

was just in the middle of the 7.4 version installation of my graphics card for vista and a little pop up popped up and said INF FILE WAS NOT FOUND,so the installation carries on as normal and at the end it says FAILURES OCCURED DURING INSTALLATION so i click on VIEW LOG and it has the log of the installation
