Sounds like your wireless driver has to be reinstalled, do you have a disk? Is it picking any wireless networks up, eg next door?

Check the channel the router is set to. New ones go up to channel 16 but older devices don't so it could be out of its range

Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then, under System, clicking Device Manager.‌ Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Look for the wireless adapter under network, if it is there, try updating the driver, iif it's not there then sounds like a hardware problem.

It would probably be easier to buy a small usb wireless dongle

This might sound like a no brainer but... some laptops have physical wifi on/off switches/buttons.
These can be standalone or via the FN+ subkeys.

It's worth just checking as this has caught people out before and is an easy fix.

Good luck with it all

Most likely this

I know that some older HP laptops had problems with the wireless network cards failing, but as said previously could just be inadvertently flicking the Wi-Fi switch.

Might be worth just rebooting the router aswell.

One of the most common problems and easiest to resolve is the wireless zero configuration. Try this, only takes a few seconds and can be quickly removed from your to do list if this is not the solution.

The FN keys are a subset of keys on the standard keyboard, they can be activated by pressing (holding) the "FN" key which is typically in the bottom right of the keyboard (possibly with blue/yellow text).
You then want to look for a wifi button (probably an antenna icon) on one of the "F" keys at the top of the keyboard.
Pressing FN and the wifi key together will toggle the wifi on and off.

Wiki page explaining FN keys:

Unfortunately keyboards differ due to the manufacturers placing of the FN keys, so without the specific model number I can't be more specific.

However here is a useful webpage with pictures:

Better hope your wife's laptop isn't a older NVIDIA based laptop. Check out nvidiadefect.com/
Fingers crossed this isn't your problem as it only affects older laptops but you might be able to get some money back.

Some older laptops also have a tiny switch on them that turns the radio of the wifi adapter off
