    Computer/Internet Related Question

i have a laptop in my room and i have a wireless router downstairs

but the laptops wireless connection with the router is **** and when its connected it sometimes doesnt load so i have to switch it off and on agen very quickly every few minutes to keep it working.

i was thinking about getting a pc but i was wondering if the problem is with my laptop or the wireless router being too far?

if the problem is with the wireless being too far can i have a wired connection to the internet without connecting the wire to the router as i have a phone socket in my room? or does the wire have to be connected to the router cos its all the way downstairs?

    regards

Easiest thing to do is buy a wireless bridge for about £15-£25 it essentially does what it says, has 2 strong aerials and it picks up the wireless signal and transmits it further(depending on where you put it)

Best thing is not to use wireless full stop m8 ..... its so unsafe .

Not if its encrypted connection pavilion

    WPA(2) is perfectly safe.

Can you tack a cat5/6 wire to the skirting board?

    What model router is it?

    go to ]http//ww…ut/

download there program, run it it will check see if any other networks about, what chanel they and you on etc so you can alter yours to see if helps.

Oh dear. Wireless is perfectly safe if you take precautions to protect yourself as others have mentioned.

Invest in a router that transmits further - we have a router downstairs and I dont have a problem using laptop upstairs. Different routers offer different distances

Also depends on the wireless card installed in your laptop.

To help a bit more. what make / model is your laptop and what make / model is the router. some combinations have problems.

Yeh probably the safest available. The others are easy hackable

    its all relative

WEP is good enough in most cases, especially if someone else near you has no security, and there are still many who do not enable security, or do not have the knowledge to set it up.

For the casual "internet bandwidth thief" WEP will still put most off.

Yes WEP is hackable quite quickly, but you do need to know what you are doing and the casual "war driver" will not bother.

The more determined will only go after your connection if there is a perceived reason, i.e. you have something of interest to them on your network.

So yes WPA2 is the best , WPA is still pretty good, the hack times for a WPA connection is in excess of 30 mins, so again only a determined hacker will bother.

So as I say its all relative, just use the best your router has and use a stroong randon password, use a password generator to set your password, not a word or digit string like most people use.

    Use something like

    soroban.co.uk/wep…htm

    to generate your pass keys

If you use a 63 random char key on WPA 30mins is ridiculous, more like months of brute force, which noone other than the authorities would bother with so makes it even more unlikely than a WEP cracker.

WPA(2) is fine but at the same time the only real security on wireless.

    Sorry I should clarify

WPA PSK with a short key as most people used, like pets names, digit strings etc can be hacked very quickly by brute force attck. As you say a 63 random char key is much much harder for such hacking methods.

that is why I did recommend the use of a full 63 char radom key using a key generator is the best way

    hm, thanks for the help

i have a netgear dg834g wireless router and an acer laptop which il check up on later, we only have a reasonably sized house too and my room is on the next floor.

ive tried a firmware upgrade a few times but it still doesnt solve the problem

and aol the coonts cap my broadband to 50kb/s so from 4ish till 10ish the internet is uber slow on my laptop but after that it seems fine for longer periods

il probably wait until i get the new pc and see if its still messed up, but is there no way to use the phone line in my room to surf the net?

    regards
