conecting a second Computer (networking help i think)

OK, very very basic at the moment, have just got old computer up and running thanks to the guys on this site, i have a broadband modem that connects to my main computer and when the kids want on theirs i unplug the modem from one computer to the other so they can go on-line with their's,
Is there a simple (cabled - not ready to go wireless yet) way to get 2 lines coming out from the one modem.

any help - even if it is just to say it's not possible would be appreciated xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx thanks fizzie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Easiest way for you would be to buy a crossover cable. Connect both computers with it and use ICS. The only downside is the computer thats connected to the modem needs to be turned on for the internet to work on the other PC.

The easiest and cheapest would probably be a crossover cable to connect the 2 pc's
Crossover cables let you connect one PC to another, so the internet goes into one, then the crossover cable takes it the other one, but the first computer needs to on for the second one to have internet access.
But that will really depend on if you have network cards in both pc's and if you have spare ports
What sort of modem do you have, what connection are you using (usb/ethernet?)?

Both the above post are good ideas but would need two network ports in the main PC and as you say the pc has to be switched on and configured to share the Internet.

The simplest way is to buy yourself a router. plug both PC into the router and then the router plugs into the modem.

Internet Connection Sharing - not the easiest thing in the world to get to work.

Keep doing what you are doing it is easiest and cheapest way.

Many older computers do not have network cards. Google network cards to get pic.

That's only if it's an ethernet modem, it may be a usb adsl modem which would need a combined router/modem although only one ethernet port for sharing the connection.

ICS on XP is almost an automatic process. It's not exactly that hard to setup on 98se.

    Anyway Fizzie...

Look on the back of both PC's for a socket that looks like this : (one on the right)

If you have that on both PC's then all you need is the xover cable and you're good to go:thumbsup:

Ebuyer router is the one but you will still need a network card in both computers.

But note it is for broadband that comes down telephone line not cable.

Many isp will give you a router.

Yep that's the one:thumbsup: I've got a dedicated server thats on 24/7 running utorrent connected via an ST-330 modem (like the op has), that then goes to an 8 port switch. But in this case the switch isn't needed as it only has to feed one other PC.

Goodnight fizziebabes - in response to your earlier question, ethernet is a common name for standard networking. Sounds like you're all sorted
