you just need to use the ethernet cable that came with the xbox and plug it directly into the router

yes or you need a set of homeplugs (powerline adapter) that will give you a wired connection using the electric sockets of the house faculty-x.net/hom…htm plug one in near the router then use a small ethernet cable into the plug and into the xbox then take the other adapter and plug that into the socket near the xbox and use another small lead from the plug to the xbox

The cable needed is known as CAT 5 Ethernet. There are two different types of wiring you can have but as your friend will be using a router, they require the most common - Straight Through. I havent used this website but their prices seem really good:

I wouldnt recommend PC World or Maplin - they're prices will be much more!

Can you move the router upstairs? If you can't then I'm afraid you'll have to spend money on homeplugs, or a gaming bridge or the MS wireless adaptor........

Amazon resellers or ebuyers are very good for cables.

I have two 360's in my house mine is connected via wireless while the other is connected with a long ethernet cable. I'd get a tape measure and do a check of how long you need then get slightly longer so you have enough slack.
