Connecting the PS3 to the HDTV with HDMI Cable

If I connect my PS3 to my HDTV with a HDMI cable, do I still have to use the AV Adaptor thingy as well or just the HDMI?

If so, when I switch on the PS3 will automatically override whichever channel I am on and go to the PS3, then when turn the PS3 off go back to the original channel I was on.

    Thanks in advance.

Just HDMI needed, doesn't override as far as I know.

You can use both or either. Just select which you want to use in the audio and video settings menu.

For example I have mine setup with HDMI for my TV and HDMI and AV Output for projector and stereo

The reason I ask is that I seem to be having problems with the connection. I have only had the PS3 a couple of weeks. When I connected it 1st time I did the settings etc and it was connected the same as my Wii, with the 3 coloured AV leads. I connected it, played a few games, then when I changed over one of the games the picture then went off. I have tried the standby thing with then works and says connect the controller via the usb lead then press ps3. I do this that then gives me 6 (I think) options, number 1 being system restart (or something like that), selected that, then I hear the start up tune but there is no picture. I don't know where to go next as cant get into the PS3 menu of any sort to have a play. Thought the HDMI thing may work. Any idea's???

Sounds like the TV - if you've got a TV with HDMI then use it! The picture is four times better (at least!)

When I plug the Wii back into the same sockets, it works fine. Strange or what.
Will pick up a HDMI and see.

not sure if this is the answer to your problem, but when you switch on the console, if you hold the on switch for 4/5 seconds until it beeps then it should ask if you want to play in 1080p high definition. When you switch between a normal tv and a hdtv you need to do this reset (holding the on switch till it beeps), so may be a similar problem and might be worth a try. Apologies if im way off topic.

Tried the option with the 2 beeps (as earlier listed) which gives you the 6 options.
I think I did it with the 1 beep. It was on standby, then kept the button pressed until beeped once (I think) but nothing appeared on the screen at all. Should I then press something else (e.g. "X" button or something) ?!?!?!?! Arrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhh

Nothing appears on screen it just sets the ps3 back to standard definition once you plug an hdmi source in it will always look for that source until you fo the 5 second standby hold switch on .

The problem is one of 3 things.

1.. Your TV AV input - But you have excluded this because your Wii works fine.

    2.. Your PS3

    3.. Your AV lead.

You need to test the two individually. Borrow a friends AV lead and plug that in. If it works, you have your answer. If it doesn't work, you know it's your PS3.

If it is the PS3, then you can try the HDMI option, but changing the settings without a visual display is REALLY hard. Can you remember what firmware you are on? Because you'll need to ask someone how many times you've got to push right, then x, then down, then x, then down etc.. before you get to the option of HDMI changing. It's gonna be a nightmare, because if it doesn't work, you don't know if it's broke, or if you just didn't do it right.

If it's still under warranty, I'd get it changed.
