    connecting to the internet

my sisters desktop pc broke on saturday so i lent her my spare laptop, when ive used it its been with wireless but my sister doesnt have wireless she just has the ethernet cable plugged in, so i plugged the ethernet cable to the laptop but it wouldnt connect to the laptop, i found a bit where it said set up connection and it said enter the providers user name and password or something like that, (shes with virgin media) so does she need to ring virgin or is there something else that she can do to get it to work, shes been connected to someones wireless yesterday but its a very poor signal.

i dont think so, shes been with them that long. i dont remember having to do anything like this when i got a new laptop or is it different if you connect with wireless.

Try to disable the wireless network and use the ethernet port it should work. Once its set up with Virgin you dont need a username and password.

hi how do you do that, i was trying to do something like that yesterday but im no good with stuff like that and just couldnt find anything.

Why not phone Virgin Technical Support and get them to talk your sister through it. It's usually a free call, isn't it?

The laptop might have a switch on the side to turn the wireless on and off. You will be able to tell from the icon in the system tray (the bit by the clock) if it's on or not

    If no joy, call virgin

they dropped that a while back although it is now an 0845 number. I have only need help once in the last few years and just went through 150 (free).

    Service fault or technical support

    Broadband or Phone service:
Call 0845 454 2222 and select Option 3 when prompted.

I always ring 150 and their very helpful. good luck.

You don't need a username/password to connect over ethernet.

Has the ethernet port been used before? (in which case in may already have settings that are inappropiate).

Which OS (XP, Vista or 7)?
