Contents Insurance

Have any of you's made claims on your contents insurance before? If so, what did you get? Was it better than the original product you had?

They typically refund old for new to the latest identical model.

Depends on what your terms & conditions dictate.

I got burgled & I got everything replaced by the same product (if the item was still available)

However, the tv I had nicked was replaced imo by a better one as the Bravia they wanted to replace it with was an earlier model but the Panasonic Viera it was replaced with was similar to the one nicked. Hope that makes sense.

Some companies do an old for new.

Well, a couple of questions to ask really:

How much is your excess to make a claim? Usually around £100 - £250.

How much will making this claim effect your no claims bonus when you renew next year?

How much would it cost to buy a new tv?

The reason I ask is that when I made a claim, I found couple of companies wouldn't insure me the year after. (Albeit my claim was around £2,500) But also my premiums went through the roof.

If you do claim, I would say the this: If you own a say, 2 year old Sony Bravia, they will most likely replace with a new Sony Bravia or at the very least a better model than the one you had.

However, check your policy. Some companies even send you vouchers to spend instore.

Hope this helps

also, some companies only give the value of the goods taking into account age etc

most wont allow for a broken TV anyway unless you have accidental damage cover.

How did the TV break?

Oh, it hasnt broke. I was just trying to get my head round a few things and used that as example. Im going to be taking contents insurance out soon, but it was just a few things I had wondered about and thought Id ask on here for previous experience.

Dont worry, Im not committing fraud!
