Yeh the 360 pad works with vista and I definitely agree that its the best pad.

Wired one too if you don't want batteries, also works with Vista: microsoft.com/har…iew

I use an official Microsoft Xbox 360 controller (wired) and official Sony Dualshock PS2 pad. Must admit, I prefer the 360 pad as i like the analogue trigger buttons (gives much more control for driving games). Also, having big hands, the 360 pad just feels more comfortable. The other advantage with the 360 pad is you can plug it straight in, you don't need to get an adapter.

I didn't go for the wireless version because at the time it wouldn't work with XP (not sure about now), also as you have to have the Crossfire receiver, it seemed pretty pointless as you still have a wire coming out of your PC, which is a pain if you use a laptop, so you might as well use a wired controller anyway.

Mouse and keyboard? What's the advantage of having a gamepad?

Oh, and a good joystick for flight games.

Neither are as good for certain types of games. i.e. I find racing games and sports games such as PES, easier with a gamepad than I do a joystick, and also for a lot of platform/third person action type games, such as Lego Star Wars, etc. hehehe...For the GTA games I use a weird mix of keyboard/mouse for the third person bits and a gamepad for the driving bits.

That's probably why then, I don't tend to play sport/racing games. Flightsims have obvious shortcomings using the mouse/keyboard but I've never noticed anything in third person action games or driving games (trackmania nations forever for example) that would be better with a gamepad.

Although the last console I had with the N64 so maybe they've improved since then.

When I first played PC games (1988) I used joysticks all the time. You couldn't get analogue joypads back then. Even when Microsoft brought out their first ]gamepad for the PC I rarely used it. Being digital it just didn't have the control. It wasn't until I got the adapter and started using the PS2 Dualshock pads, that I switched from my preference for the joystick. In fact that combined with no longer playing flight sims, means I've used nothing but gamepads and mouse/keyboard since. LOL I have a draw full of redundant Joysticks spanning many years of computer gaming. ;-)

I find I can't control driving games with keyboard/mouse. There just isn't the control. And with analogue triggers on the Xbox 360 controller, you have full control of both throttle and breaks. I can't see how you can ever replicate that on keyboard and mouse? Still, you won't ever convince me that a gamepad is better than the old faithful combination of keyboard/mouse for FPS games.

I believe ]Play is at £17.99 (plus the 5% voucher, plus 4% Quidco), but I've only had a quick look.
