converting your car to autogas - anyone have any experience?

Following on from a thread on here about ecomnomical cars , I was thinking of converting my car (ford fusion) to an autogas engine.

Does anyone have any experience of this ? How is your car running ? Where did you get it done and how much ? I have seen a couple of people at the pumps with this and it seems easy enough to fill up .

I do alot of milage a year 20k plus and would like to convert if possible .If I cant then I will probaly buy one ( again any heads up advise would be appreciated).

    many thanks for any help

Don't do it. My friend has just spent so much on his Peugeot 807 after thinking his head gasket had gone. He had it repaired then the engine management system light came on. The main dealer said that the gas conversion was 'probably' to blame. He had new, harder valves(?) fitted too as apparently the gas burns at a higher temperature. Also you do not get as many miles to the gallon. Go diesel instead, drive conservatively and you'll probably get as economical as a gas conversion.

I had a Ford Focus converted to autogas and unfortunately for me, I was the guinea pig for the company fitting it. After paying them £1500 for the conversion, I later found out that my car was their first conversion after the guy had come back from his training course!! After about 3 to 4 weeks of little problems they finally got it right.

At the time I had the car, autogas was 32p per litre and once the car was right, it was fantastic and unbelievably economical. Other than the occasional slight smell of autogas, there was no further problems.

I recommend you do a bit of research on local converters before taking the plunge and even visit them to check they know what they're doing. Don't do as I did and go to the dealership for them to sort it, as they will either screw it up (as mine) or ship it out to another garage and put their profits on top.

    | haven't got it anymore. I've got a Diesel Zafira now. I would have kept it though other than wanting a 7 seater.

Once the car was right, you wouldn't have known the difference really. Possible not as powerful as running it on petrol, but if petrol was 100% power, then autogas would have been about 95%. Hardly noticeable really.

Fuel wise, you use a little bit more autogas than petrol, but the difference in price is still fantastic. Great for long runs or if you do lots of miles. You have a switch on the dashboard that lets you switch from gas to petrol, just in case you can't find an autogas filling station.

my small van had already been converted when i bought it but got the gas system all checked over before i started using it on gas. Have had it 2 years now and had no problems. You can get a map book from go atuogas which list all the garages that sell LPG which is very useful if you travel around (you can also log on to their site www.goautogas.co.uk) it also tells you which ones do the conversions. I always take mine to the small garages to fill up not petrol stations as they tend to be cheaper my local 44p a litre local shell garage 56p. My partner says that it doesnt have as much go in it that he has to put his foot down when driving but i have no problems

WE have had two conversions so far. gpo on advice above and check the compamies reputation before you do anything! THere isnt a noticable power difference on the cars we have had done, and they are MUCH cheaper to run:) ALTHOUGH gas was a lot cheaper and has been slowly creaping up and up!

my mate has a van that runs on gas, he said it works out a lot cheaper. you use fuel too, not at the same time! you would have to work out the costing if you were getting it done. not something i would want to do myself! gas = dangerous in my book! also i think he struggles to find garages that sell the gas! good luck!

again thanks to all who have replied , but are you guys based near london , can you recommend me your garages where you got it done?

Other thing to bear in mind is if you want to go across the channel they may not let you take a converted car. Seem happy enough if car is factory bought but less happy if you have had it converted. Also worth checking out any insurance implications

Your best bet is to ask on a dedicated forum, the information is prob going to be much more reliable.

Wow, I though I'd be the only one with a bad experience. My parents got their range rover done. Absolute total nightmare.

Sorry had to rush out. Will explain later but basically it never ran right again, unless u locked off the gas completely. It was just awful. Breaking down constantly not idling right. Seems a common problem too
