No tips as i wouldn't want my bf have one sorry

as a biker myself I made a deal with my Mrs I got the bike only if she got a life insurance policy it's a win win really lol

Just get it, if you want it and can afford it then don't worry about getting approval

I was doing about 60 when i was hit by a new car driver doing about 40, i was stopped dead, sandwiched between car and bike my legs were a mess my helmet was 300 yards down the road in bits and my right eye destroyed and my neck broke in 3 places, i remain in a wheelchair today despite the ability to feel very slight sensation in my hands due to spinal cord damage,if i had my time again i would not get a bike due to the mess it left my wife in as she was told by an officer i was dead at the scene, it was a whole year before i was allowed home and we both cried a river, and still do.

    So thats a no then!

    So thats a no then!

    for me "that's a no"

the comment above is sad.an I'm sorry what you went threw, my boyfriend as a bike an I do worry sick when he's on it but I see life that if it's ment to happen it will happen anyway, sometimes you have to do what' you like to do, u may never please your girlfriend by having one but in time I suppose she would get over it.

I have been riding bikes since I was 16 and have to say it's a lot more dangerous for learners than it ever was, you have to cope with some drivers who go out of their way to make it dangerous for bikers and I never had that until about ten years ago.
It is very difficult for loved ones, they hear weekly about accidents involving bikes and are sure in there own minds that it will only be a matter of time. Convince her that you don't want it to race around and that it's something you need to get out of your system, tell her you will pass your test, get a bike and keep it for a year when you promise to talk it over with her again. At the end of the year you will have needed to have shown her that you are safe and she will go along with your wishes.
It is the best fun you can have on the road, just remember to ride defensively always looking ahead at what you would do in any circumstance. It keeps you alert and safe.
Good luck and let's see a picture of the bike when you get it!

Would an off road bike be a suitable compromise?

My wife works as a Radiographer and she generally says that the worst cases she comes across are Motorbike related. Not always the fault of the rider as well, so as careful as you can be you can't account for other road users.

as one of the comments above I am very much the attitude of if it's going to happen it will. I'm sorry to hear about your accident..
I'm not much of an offroad bike. I was looking into a 600cc bandit / sports bike rrally I used to have a cbt so had two years worth riding when I was 16 but never followed it through as I couldn't afford a car and a bike but now I can

Tell her you'll be sensible. I know you can be sensible and still have an accident, but that applies to everything. Get the best protective kit you can afford and save your racing for a track. Generally, riding a bike is as safe or as dangerous as you make it. As long as you are sensible and think ahead, you minimise the risk. Get personal accident insurance on top of your bike policy to cover time off work and additional costs. If you want to do it, talk to her, assure her and just do it.

Just buy one and deal with the consequences later, it's a good philosophy.

It is no compensation but I hope your/ their insurance company have sorted you out financially.

I had an operation that left me on a spinal injuries unit for 6 months and it was heartbreaking to witness the number of other mostly young patients who would be in wheelchairs the rest of their lives due to accidents on their motorbikes. I too had always wanted one but never would I now get on one after that experience.

Live is there to be lived and enjoyed but above all else value your health and the health of those you love and hold dear.

24 in January, will you reach 25? It's not you it's other drivers, bikes are so vulnerable, no protection. I'm on your girlfriends side I'm affraid.

thing is of bikes were that bad they wouldn't allow them on the road.. I had a look at statitistics earlier and there's a high fatality rate In cars then there is bikes obviously there are more cars but still

This is such a poignant story , makes you think , I wouldn't want my son to ride a motor bike. But you should not have to get permission to get one either from your girlfriend.

what do u mean? as in what bike there all similar

Don't get a 600cc to start with. Start with something smaller. I had a 150cm for the first two years and rode it daily. I learned a lot, did about 5k miles before I moved up to a 600cc.

And if you do get a bike, really you need something to remind you of the dangers regularly. From time to time I force myself to watch youtube videos of motorcycle accidents. It's horrible, but it reminds me how easy things can go wrong in a split second.

That should have said 125cc above

    youtube.com/wat…OJw

The dramatic film, captured on a head-cam fitted to the rider’s helmet, shows the moment a car crosses into the path of Norwich motorcyclist David Holmes who was killed on the A47 at Honingham in June last year :-( RIP

Get a track bike instead of a road bike.
Far to many drivers on the road with out a clue.

For the past 4 years I have rode around on my Suzuki DR125SM, I have just passed my driving test in October - having 2 small children now the fear of getting on one day, and not making it home the next got to me.

Only came off once and broke my elbow in the first 500 miles of the bikes life by somebody pulling out on me! Other than that somebody did crash into the back of me in November 2012 and luckily a slight bit of whiplash but nothing major.

It totally depends on what you want from the bike and what you are going to use it for. Either way, I wouldn't get one until you get your licence then get down to a used bike dealer and take a few out for a spin. Bikes Arnt like cars. They arnt all the same. Different type bikes act in very different ways and you may find that you enjoy riding a different style of bike that you think you will.

Yeah I'll be using it for me and for work. and these are the types of bikes I've always loved but once I have the license I will try a few but these are just a few I'm looking ag

Will you be using it all year round or just in the good weather? What sort of budget are you thinking?

    Original Poster

I'd use it in slight rain but not anything major and looking at about 2000 ish for the bike

Raptorcigs comment says it all really. Every motorcyclist I've ever met has a horror story of a bike crash, either them or a friend or both.

Plus daily I see the bikes white lining and near missing -only a matter of time, not worth it mate, too dangerous. Sorry

I started on a SV650s, then went to a R6, followed by a ST1050 and finally the Ninja.....

Personally, the most fun was the Ninja, but the Triumph ST1050 was an amazing bike, you can pick them up around 5k for a decent one and the exhaust sounds brilliant! I am going to buy another one soon. Lots of storage to, so you can store helmet and things for going away etc.

The Ninja handled superb, i took it all around the south coast and had all my things in a canoeing style bag strapped on the bike, it was faultless!

Go test ride some when you pass, you can just walk in and jump on one in most places, once they check your details etc.

Forgot to add, I have never crashed, and hopefully won't. But if i do, thats life.

funny you say that, I switched from a silly (yet brilliant learner bike), a cbr 125 , to my current Fazer FZ6
then again, with a little boy at home and a demanding job, I only use the bike to commute to the train station these days..

If you do get a bike keep off the drain covers in the road (even more when it's been raining) remember your life saver. And always do 80mph on motorway, as it's safer to be in front all the time. And last but not least buy the best chain or lock to keep her safe.:)

Think you have already made your mind up. I would never go on a bike. Heck even a bicycle
is dangerous on London roads. Good luck and stay safe.
