Cooling Off Period advice - Car Purchase

On Saturday I signed up to buy a used car from a large high street dealership and paid a small deposit which they said they would use towards getting the road tax ready. I had only intended on looking at the car but with my wife present and obviously keen on it I made the error of agreeing a deal.

Since then I have researched a bit more and feel I am paying considerably over the odds and I could buy the same vehicle much cheaper. Do consumers have the right to a cooling off period in such circumstances to cancel the contract?

I know it was daft but any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

I don't think its unreasonable to go straight back and explain the circumstances. They may improve the deal or give your money back ...Good Luck
the deposits we recently put on cars were all refundable if we changed our minds as long as they hadn't started work on taxing the car - that was explained to us by the salesman both times and we had two deposits refunded then bought the 3rd car.

I think once they sort the tax out it costs them money so thats the problem but they should have explained that to you.
If you signed on their premises, then you are not entitled to a refund.

That doesn't mean you will not get one, it is just that they don't have to give you one.

On a serious note though, you've no legal entitlement to a refund and the dealer could sue you to enforce the contract. However, the odds are that they will not do so and, if you approach it right, you might even get to renegotiate the price or get your deposit back. You're probably in with a better chance if it's a franchised main dealer although most reputable dealers are likely to be helpful.

You might find that they'll want you to buy a different car from them. If they suggest this, it could be a reasonable alternative if the car you're buying is seriously overpriced. Do your homework first and you should be able to negotiate a good price on the next car.
There is a cooling off period but what you want is a cooling off period under the Distance Selling Regulation 2004. Unfortunately your type of transaction is not covered under these set of regulations as it is not distance selling.
