    Cordless phone that's NTL/Virgin compatible?

The house we bought was previously BT only and has several BT sockets scattered around the house but we decided to go with Telewest (now Virgin) for our phoneline but as a consequence we only have 1 working line now and that's in the living room.

Therefore I would like a cordless phone or twin pack.

I see Tesco are doing the Panasonic TG7102E Twin Pack DECT next Sunday as their deal of the day for £30 (half price) - can anyone confirm if this would be NTL/Virgin compatible or would it be BT only? - Or any other suggestions around the £30 mark?

Also having never owned a cordless phone before I am a tad naive, if we bought a twin pack would one of them be able to stay upstairs permanently despite us having no Virgin line for them to sit near?

They'll be compatible with Cable. If its a twin Dect pack you need one plugged into the master socket and mains. The other can go where you want (with a mains). Is the Virgin socket close to any of the BT sockets? I could guide you through swinging the extension from BT to Cable.

Hi Paddy, cheers for the quick reply, our 1 and only Virgin socket is in our living room but it's about 8ft away (on the same wall) from the BT one.

So if I buy that one from Tesco's next week - tescodealoftheday.com/com…tml - You mention the 2nd unit can go anywhere as long as it's plugged into mains, will it come with an adapter provided do you know?

I would think it would come with everything you need to plug in and go, It would probably be quite easy to connect the other extensions around the house.

Does the BT socket 8ft away look like this

If it's the 1st you'll need about 9ft of cable (pennys from B and Q)

It's like the 1st one, so won't this twin pack work unless I buy cable to adapt it to the BT line?

No there the same, BT makes the sockets for the other companys too. Just you could get all the extensions in the house to work by buying 9m of cable from b and q and 10 minutes work. Really easy. Those phones will work with NTL/Virgin/Telewest out of the box as they would with BT.

Ah right, so you are saying that just by sorting that socket in the living room it would make the one's upstairs work too? - That would be handy, I am next to useless at DIY so it would have to be very easy for me to attempt it mindyou

3 Wires to connect at each end thats all.

Paddy is wrong telling you to do that..
you are not permitted to alter a phone socket wiring...
buy an extension kit or a splitter to do it correctly.

if you alter the wiring and get it wrong, the phone compant (whoever it is) will bill you for turning out and repairing it... that will cost you more than buying a phone extension kit

Openreach Engineer, know what I'm talking about. You are permitted to run as many extensions as you want after the NTE face plate, before that is network wiring and you are not permitted to touch that. If you balls it up unplug it, it's that simple even you could do it. Anyway well done on bumping a 4 year old thread

I was wondering why this was showing in my recent activity!!!

This thread is so old that I no longer live in that house and we are back using a BT line again now!
