Cost of policing Bradford EDL demo 'in six figures'

Police from 14 forces were involved in the operation to contain the demonstrators
The cost of policing two rival demonstrations in Bradford on Saturday is expected to be "several hundred thousand pounds", police have said.

The right-wing English Defence League (EDL) and its Unite Against Fascism (UAF) opponents held separate protests.

Hundreds of officers from West Yorkshire Police were supported by colleagues from 13 other forces during the operation to keep the groups apart.

Thirteen protesters were arrested after several skirmishes broke out.

Police contained several hundred EDL supporters behind a temporary barricade in the city's Urban Gardens as about 300 people gathered for an event hosted by UAF about half a mile away at the Crown Court Plaza.

During the protests, nearly 100 EDL supporters climbed over the 8ft (2.4m) barricade to get on to neighbouring waste ground from where they threw missiles at police.

However, only one protester and one police officer suffered minor injuries and no property was damaged during the entire operation.

    Marches banned
The EDL had originally planned to march through Bradford, prompting fears that its presence could spark unrest like the riots which hit the city in 2001.

Home Secretary Theresa May authorised a blanket ban on marches in Bradford, but this did not prevent Saturday's "static" demonstrations.

West Yorkshire's Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison said: "The ban of the march seems to have worked.

"No officers were seriously injured and there was no damage to property.

"All those arrested [on Saturday] were from protesting groups.

"The citizens of Bradford were, therefore, unmoved and untroubled to any significant extent and this was due to the excellent planning and joint endeavours of the police and local council."

In the build-up to the EDL demonstration, 10,000 Bradford residents signed a petition opposing it and hundreds attended peace events in the city.

Good work by the cops but disgraceful what the EDL did to the police.

6 figures could be as low as £100,000 or £1000.00, probably insignificant if you compare this against the Pakistan Nuclear Budget in the past 30 years.

The money would have been better spent if they had smashed every single supporter of the EDL in the face with batons and tasered their eyeballs.

The EDL should be alarmed at the amount of money spent especially as the Government are making cut backs, their dole money may be in jeopardy

No it couldn't. Our local police force hasn't had to pay for controlling a riot, are they suddenly going to pay £100,000 to a charity because they have it lying around?

I haven't had to replace my laptop because it hasn't broken. Am I going to donate £350 to the dogs home because I didn't have to replace a laptop that didn't break?

The protest was dumb just showed how the EDL looked like scum and I have to agree with Boothy, money that could have been saved is money that tax payers have given and I would prefer it went to a charity in this country.

Why do you idiots think that public services have large coffers of money lying about that they can dispense to random charities week in, week out if the money isn't spent by midnight on a Sunday evening.

I don't want to be pedantic, but a typo is when you hit the wrong key by mistake. What you've done is be a bit stupid, and try to cover for it badly by blaming your phone, which just makes you look a bit special.

Speaking of phones though, how come you are posting these ramblings from an iPhone, anyway? Just sayin', y'know, you've mentioned a few times that you think that the money spent on this EDL protest would've been better spent on the victims of the flood. Seems a bit hypocritical for you to say that using a high-value mobile phone, when you've had ample time to sell it so that you could donate the proceeds to Pakistan. Or do you value your shiny consumer goods more than the lives of your fellow Muslims?

    Original Poster

It was defo a typo. Secondly Islam doesn't tell you to donate every penny you have. And yeah I've donated quite bit to these floods. Also going to collect money as soon as I get the backing from my mosque or a charity.

What a stupid comment, thats basically saying that benefit claimants are intolerant thugs who dont care about others,

The EDL is a joke! Bunch of jumped up chavs using all their benefits getting from one city to another just to try and stir up hatred.

The UK is in a bad state financially the money could have been used in a much more constructive way but the EDL loonies can’t help but act like the animals they are.

OP, why have you called it the EDL demo and not the UAF demo. EDL have the right to demo peacefully but the UAF try and stir things up, meaning massive resources.

It is a FACT of society that a lower socio-economic class is associated with poorer education, poorer standards of healthcare and increased levels of crime, and the levels of social inequality are actually increasing rather than decreasing.

Its a bit of a non-story saying the "cost of policing" in this way based on man-hours. Police are employed to do just this, and they are paid a salary - sure it will have cost a bit to draft in from other forces, and no doubt a bit of overtime, but something tells me that isn't how the figures quoted are calculated...
