I have been on housing benefits since I left uni 6months ago so Ive never really paid coucil tax.. Im starting a new job in february and will obviously have to start paying it.. I hear you get a break for 2 months (I think for leicester its january and february) so how would that affect me? Someone said that they would backdate me for the year which means I would be paying £915.00 in a month.. that surely cant be right!!!

They wont backdate you for the year...but in terms of a break what they tend to do is collect all years money, in 10 monthly payments. But they'd split the year up into months and bill you for how many months you'll be eligible to pay.

In Hampshire they take the figure for the year and divide it by 10.

You pay the amount in 10 instalments, instead of 12, don't know why it's like that.

Probably because no one at the council can divide by 12 :-D

If you have been getting council tax benefit, and you are starting a job which means you won't be entitled they will work out how much you owe from the day you start work to the end of the current tax year, it won't be back dated a year. Although people who pay via direct debit usually pay over 10 months with january and february being payment free, it Does NOT mean that council tax is free in those months, Your bill for the year is just simply split into 10 payments instead of 12. So for the current tax year you will owe aprox 2 months council tax, you may still be entitled to some benefit though, depends how much you earn and if you live alone or not.
