Council fines drivers for helping old ladies cross the road

I heard this on KMFM this morning.

Sevenoaks Council have fined a taxi driver for parking in the designated taxi zones and helping a partially blind lady across the street and to a shop. The driver was apparently gone for no longer than 10 minutes and came back to a hefty fine. On appeal the council refused to revoke it and said "Drivers cannot leave their cars for ANY reason".

Now don't get me wrong - parking restrictions have to exist in some places, but aren't these kind of rules supposed to help the 'flow' of our society, so nobody is restricted from travelling or in any danger? How in the name of god is fining people doing 'random acts of kindness' benefiting the borough the rules are there to serve?

When I sometimes do voluntary driving I'm told that stopping outside Age Concern to pick up an old lady in a wheelchair WILL result in a fine and there's no way around it.

    Makes my blood boil!

I got fined £50 in a pay and display cos i was 6 minutes late. My little one was sick so had to change his clothes, appealed and got rejected as i should have put money in for 3 hours and not 2! As though i knew he was going to be sick whilst i was parked there! Bunch of *******!!

Dont believe everything you read or hear without a pinch of salt. Dont get me wrong, but does it really take 10 minutes to help someone across the road?

I heard a bunch of these kinda stories on LBC the other week. Some lady had her husband die in hospital and was fined literally as her husband lay there dying. Now the warden in the hospital carpark probably didn't know this - so ok, you'd think she could appeal and they'd let it drop. Hell no. Apparently she had MONTHS of writing/appealing before they finally revoked it. Sickening!

A friend was fined £50 for being 10 mins late in a Pay and Display zone as her eye operation was delayed a couple of months ago, what luck!

 what does a 2 month delay for an op have to do with being late in a pay & display?:?

I dont get these 'only x minutes late' complaints as surely late is late. I always put the maximum amount in that I think i will need for my shop and add 1 hour just in case.

If the warden sees a car over the time allowed, then he/she issues a ticket. they can't wait around in case someone is only 10 minutes overdue.

Yeah, but sureley there are exceptional circumstances. " hours shopping for me is normally more hana enough, surely the warden could have stopped typing into the machine when i turned up but no she carried on and told me tough!
