    Courtesy car - Advice

Just after some advice if anyone can help

My parents purchased a 6 month old car from a dealership and we found problems with the car so it's gone back to be fixed and they were given a courtesy car but upon getting home noticed that the water compartment in the engine was empty and also the engine warning light came on.

Is it the dealerships responsibility to make sure that the car is in drivable condition before letting the customer take it or is it down to the customer as the woman in the garage was not bothered.

The garage is also about an hour away which is a pain with it not bring local

    The answer is YES

get them to deliver a new car

The garage should have their car in a reasonable condition, but its the drivers responsibility to check its roadworthy prior to use.

The engine management light could come on for all manner of reasons and could not be foreseen.

Ask them to deliver a new courtesy car and take the old one away.
If they are not willing to do this then warn them that they may be getting the original car back, via an expensive recovery, and also requiring a new engine.

    Where does this end?
Do you check the tyre pressures, water and oil level before you get a courtesy car?
Do you check if the coil packs are about to give up the ghost?
Surely the company supplying the courtesy car should take some responsibilty in this case?

Isn't it illegal for a car company to supply a car that isn't roadworthy :whistling:

    Tyre pressure - no
    tread - yes
depends what water level the OP is talking about - if its the radiator then no, id expect the garage to have checked this. If its for the washers then im sure everyone is capable of topping it up.

coil packs - dont be so pedantic.

At the end of the day if your pulled by the police and the car is deemd unroadworthy its the drivers responsibility, not the owner

    +1

The driver at the point of driving the car is responsible for it's road worthiness.

Likewise, when ever driving someone else's car, you should always check fluids and tyres, as you may find you are liable for their condition on return.

Not being pedantic, but if a courtesy car is supplied in such a poor condition, with low water ( how easy is that for the company to check?, fs they are in the motor trade, would you supply an 80 year old woman with a car that has not been checked for such simple things?), and an engine warning light comes on and they are unwilling to supply a replacement?
Let be serious, somone is at it.

    Thanks for the info

by the way i presume it's the radiator water, the container is about 2 litres and was near enough bone dry as found the washer fluid container which had stuff in

So why not just top it up? Its not rocket science. Fair enough it might not have antifreeze in but is not freezing so just top it up with water the warning light should then go off and your fine.

you should never assume as they say

We have, I was just asking is it down the the dealership to make sure before it goes out to the next customer.
Will be getting them to deliver a new car unless they say we can drive it with the engine management light being on as they don't want to drive the car in case it causes any damage and the garage try and say it our fault

The one that is full has a window wiper symbol on the cap and the empty container just has a plain black cap

generally its safe to drive with the light on

you have notified them now that the light is on and if they say its ok then they cant pin it on you

how old is the courtesy car? if its less than a year (which most generally are) it will be covered for breakdown by the manufacturer.

look at the manufactureres website for the recovery details and call them if you are worried.

they wont fix the EML, but they may tow it back to the garage and provide a hire car. this happened to me when i had a courtesy car from Fraud.......sorry Ford.
