Cursors!!=Stuck Mouse!!!

Hoping someone can help- I know the techy types on here are very clever & usually come to the rescue!

I've got a Dell PC. When i switch on & start it gets to the desktop as per usual but then the curser remains stuck dead in the middle of the screen.

I've tried a different mouse that I know definitely works but it's still the same.

Am I doing something wrong or does anyone have any solution to this?

Thanks for any advice in advance!

USB or PS2 mouse??

Does the keyboard work (or has everything completely frozen?)

1-its a standard usb mouse Harlzter.

2- I think the keyboard is ok because it lets me enter into my xp account to take me to the desktop. Can't test it anyother way.

Other stuff laods up automaticaally on the desktop i.e the msn messenger log in & the antivirus thing.

Cheers for the speedy response guys.

If it was ps2 id have said try a usb one as it may be a faulty ps2 port, I presume you have tried the mouse in different usb ports to rule out a dodgy one, and tried other things in the same usb port??

OK doke.

I'll try and pinch one from work tomorrow!

Cheers for the advice Harlzter!

I'm not the most techy minded as you prob guessed.

Dead PS/2 port sounds quite possible unfortunately, although in my experience both ports (keyboard and mouse) often go at the same time.

Does a mouse appear in device manager (use the windows key + break to get to system properties then tab to device manager...)? Its worth trying 'scan for hardware changes' in device manager also (but don't hold your breath!). USB mouse will almost certainly work so all is not lost! (I assume computer is outside of warranty?)

Try a virus scan just to be sure,
