Does it depend on what you buy as well? Or is it just based on value?

It depends on what you buy.

    dvd boxset.

You'll pay import duty @ 3.5% of the value of the item

Then VAT @ 17.5% of the value of the item including the import duty.

Then a handling fee by the courier which can be anywhere up to about £10 depending on who it is.

As a rough guide, got this info off a well know forum when I was looking for similar info but not sure if I can link to it.

Have you managed to put it in your basket and got up to the point of paying for it?
Sometimes amazon wont let you import items for whatever reason but will tell you so during the buying process.
If you haven't had that warning then that's ok.
If you've yet to check then I'd do it so that you don't figure out the import tax, only to find that you can't ship it over anyway.

I'm afraid I can't help you any further with the price of importing it, I wouldn't have a clue. But I hope it's cheap!

How weird is that, I just come on to ask a similar question.

Does anybody know if I have to pay any additional costs for a £10 book from the US? Only for sale in UK through amazon, but costs £40.

I'm thinking nothing as books are generally zero rated here, but need to check before hand with you guys.

If someone has ordered in the past or has knowledge of excise duty that would be mint!

No you won't gottohaveit since it falls short of the £18 at which you have to pay VAT, but yeah, pretty sure books are VAT exempt anyway. Might just want to wait for someone to confirm that 100% though.

How ever much it is, I doubt it'll match the price of the book had you bought it from UK amazon.

I buy off ebay from the states all the time, you don't have pay customs charges if the total of the items you have bought is under £35. If it is over this you have to pay customs plus the royal mails fee for paying in advance the customs fees (which is usually around £10). So with an order for $70 you should just about get away with not paying any extra & gottahaveit you won't have to pay anymore for your book! hope this helps...

I'm guessing you mean $35, cos it's £18 or under for commercial goods.

If the seller marks as a gift on customs form it's £36 not £35, a lot of sellers from the states will mark as low value & as a gift on request, so it's worth asking as you have nothing to lose!

Ah, apologies, I missed where you said about eBay, I thought you were still talking about Amazon.

It should be noted though that getting someone to mark an item as a gift on a customs form, when it isn't, is illegal and shouldn't be done. :whistling:

I ordered some items from America. When the postman delivered them it had a customs charge sticker on it saying that I will not get the item until I pay the import tax as the value was over £18. I would of paid but it had no infomation on how to pay. Plus I had the item anyway.
