I want to order some make up from America but I don't want to get stung by customs.

The order will only be around £25 - £30 including shipping. Is there a limit you can go up to or do they just charge customs on everything now?

Thanks

i believe its only over £18

Their are limits, if your package gets 'caught' you get charged vat + a handling fee( which on its own could be £8).

yup...
one I got charged - once I didn't. I was charged a handeling fee of £8 as well as the customs charge.

£18!! Argh, nooooo! It's not so much the customs but the £8 royal mail charge for doing absolutely ****** all that I don't want.

bought perfume from hong kong once as it was cheaper. BIG MISTAKE. customs whacked on, made it more expensive than buying it here

I thought it increased from £18 to anything over to £36

EDIT my mistake it's £18 if you are buying it for youself or £36 if it's a gift for someone else

That is my problem. I want to order some make up from Benefit, at the moment they are doing a free Bad Gal Blue Mascara when you spend over $35 and there is also a code to get a free make up pallet worth $30. So, a much better deal than you would get here but if I get caught by customs and the stupid RM charge then it makes it less of an attractive offer.

Don't do it...they charge you for the free item.....

Well benefit don't charge you, but its value is chargable. Even if your order is under the £18 threshold. Thats how I ended up getting charged. I was gutted.

Wasn't it in the news before Christmas that it had gone up to £105 or something? :?

I am correct which.co.uk/new…jsp

This is an early Xmas present for online shoppers from HMRC, who will continue to charge VAT on these items.

I dont know what to do now - I really don't want to get charged as then it basically brings the total to around what it would cost to get the items here.

Great news I'll be able to take advantage of Benefits special offers now as they never do them on the UK site!

But this is on their website too;

If you buy goods online from a country outside the European Union, for instance the USA, Canada, China, Australia
You will be charged:

Customs duty if the amount of duty is €10 (£7) or over
Import VAT if the value of the goods is €22 (£18) and over
Excise duty for some goods like alcohol and tobacco

it would be great if they had increased the allowance by so much. If thats true, then I'd go for it. otherwise... it's probably not worth the risk.

BBC - news.bbc.co.uk/1/h…stm

Internet shoppers will not have to pay customs duty on items they have … Internet shoppers will not have to pay customs duty on items they have bought for less than £105 from outside the EU.The change, which comes into force on 1 December, extends the duty-free limit for goods bought online from £18, HM Revenue and Customs says. The move will benefit thousands of consumers who buy items such as DVD players from the US, which have a 14% duty rate.VAT will still be charged on most items that cost more than £18.

A quick call to HRMC should clarify the issue, either the website has not been updated, or it has been hidden away so that people don't know about it.
