    CV writing.

I'm about to construct perhaps my first serious CV.

I'm at uni studying Journalism and I wanna pply for an xmas job.

I'd like some help though. I presume CV's aren't as straight forward as they used to be?

How good is yours? Care to share any tips? Maybe you'll share your actual CV?

I just need a push in the right direction please. I don't want my CV to be mundane etc. I just don't know where to start. (Apart from the obvious of name, address, age etc.)

    Thank you.

I'm ideally looking for structure points. I'm alright at the writing part. Just popping it all together is a struggle.

I work in HR and my manager goes insane when anyone writes their CV in Times New Roman size 10!! Where I work, if you have a single spelling or grammar mistake, your CV isn't even put in front of the hiring manager. Another big no (although possibly irrelevant to you as you're at uni) is to sum up your current job in about 3 bullet points... If you can do that, you clearly don't do a lot at work!
Make sure you show all your skills and experience - if it's not on there, we're not going to know whether you can do it and presume you can't.

Thanks for that. I was wondering how to properly structure it though. Short paragrahps just giving key details or be a little bit chatty about it?

Make sure you get it proof read judging by the amount of spelling / grammatical errors you made in the OP

    Search google for CV templates.

Chatty? No! You want to be professional! Either short paragraphs or bullet points - depending on how much you want to say. Feel free to embellish on your work, but never lie because you WILL be quizzed in interview and it will be very obvious. For instance, we interviewed someone who claimed to have knowledge of every software package under the sun... Turned out after probing those were packages he'd HEARD of!

Right okay. It's just that I've had personal statements drilled into me for the past 2 years, it's kinda what I'm used to.

I'll give it a go though. Thank you.

Perhaps OP is looking for a template for some guidance? I would help but have not got one I'm afraid

Yeah a template would be good. Or a copy of someones on here. With address/phone number etc all blanked out.

    Just never written one before....

Create one "stock" CV, which you can then tailor for different jobs. Ensure its no longer than two pages of A4, and please leave out what your hobbies and interests are, I am constantly surprised at the personal guff people put on their CVs that has no relevance to the role.

Oh and never use comic sans, I automatically bin any cv in that font.

    Original Poster

No times new roman/comic sans. No hobbies. As I have little work experince though, my cv is gonna end up been half a page - let alone 2 pages!!

No I meant whilst writing my cv in word. I don't type all my threads in word first to then upload.

Plus, that little example you popped in bold is simply my dialect. I'm a yorkshire girl so it works.

    Well I'm using firefox so......

I thought that only worked on macs. But anyway, that's not the point. And xmas is allowed!!

Most xmas jobs don't need a cv anyway.....it's also a bit late as most roles have been taken
